what the hell is going on with all these road accidents!! Scared to go out ont roads!

There have lots in Staffs too! last night was horrendous Motorway closed due to nasty accident, then 3 other roads, the same

I was on call with the ambulance service and it was just crazy out there

Trouble is roads have been dry for so long that now the damp is here they are so greasy, with the early dark nights and drizzle people are out driving who are not used to the lowered visibility !!!

everyone needs to be careful and a lot slow down

This happened at my exit off the motorway to go home after work. I left 15 mins early yesterday and missed it by minutes. The lad i normally car share with was stuck in the traffic from 3:30-7pm. At first i couldn't understand how the lorry had managed to do what it did, but he's just not turned to go around the roundabout in time and has gone straight. The barriers should be able to take more force than they can though. Tragic accident. But so so lucky that it was only the one vehicle involved. rest in peace xx

I was driving back from visiting my brother in Cheltenham and narrowly managed to avoid hitting a car that had spun 180 in the outside lane. No-one was hurt, only the one car involved but they were mighty shaken

There have always been far more accidents than we realise - but when there is a really big accident, then the reporting level goes up for a while. Much like the reports of dog attacks etc.

A few years ago the stats were 3,000+ road fatalities a year - that's 8 a day.

Another claim was that an individual was 3 times more likely to die in an RTA than be murdered.

Very sobering thoughts - especially as you can be the most careful and observent driver on the road, but it only takes one idiot to take a stupid risk and all that care counts for nothing.

I noticed there were more crashes this week, I've driven past four accidents to and from work when I might only encounter one every few months! And no matter how careful you are, it only takes one inconsiderate driver to cause chaos.

I remember the days when we used to have regular educational "ads" on the telly about beach safety ("Ooh look, Mildred, it's a dingey!" - cue: dinghy sailor waving and drowning in the background) and obeying the country code (cute rabbit with nasty plastic bag on head). Perhaps we should have some more on road safety in country lanes, especially near horses and other animals. The issues could also be rather better flagged up in the Highway Code and by driving instructors.

oh lord how incedibly lucky no one else was involved that could have been a much worse situation.
Have to agree with everything soulful said though. I live in staffordshire and around me there have been about 10 fatal crashes just on two stretches of two roads 60mph with white lines in middle but they do have some decent bends on them. All those killed ahve either been teenagers in cars or they have been motorbikers.
It is true the change in weather leads to people not remembering how to drive on wet/slippy roads. Also people hav worn there tyres down over summer and can aquaplane when hit water. I nearly did but new treads were low so didnt break on water and slowed down to allow for the risk. I am lucky probably as learnt to drive in snow/rain/ice/dark nights the bonus of having a birthday in december!!

i was sat on the runcorn bridge for an hour and a half that night, as the m56 was closed, and everything was snarled up. It is an absolute miracle noone else was involved. How a hgv falling onto to motorway across all lanes and not hit anything- well someone was watching out for those drivers, it could so easily have been a major casualty, I know when the police reports came in 30 hospitals across cheshire, lancashire and merseyside were put onto stanby to receive rta victims. No one could quite believe it when nothing came in.

Apparently there was another hgv driver on the scene very early on who tried to help the fallen driver, sadly nothing could be done. Very sad for all.

My condolences to all those involved.

There was a horrendous accident near me recently. Someone was following their sat nav, which directed them straight acroos some cross road (they were on the minor road, crossing a busy A road). Thier sat-nav didn't say that they were crossing a road, so the person just drove out straight onto the busy A road without pausing or checking that there was any traffic. I think the person pulled out infront of 2 cars, I don't think anyone was killed.
I don't know why you would blindly follow sat nav, ignoring road signs, give way signs or looking were you were going.

Sad thing is, i can't see the roads getting any better, used to hack on the roads loads as kids, but now if i had small children i wouldnt dream of letting them hack on their own, if at all :(
