A discussion that has recently come up on our yard, I feed my horses their breakfast at 6.45am monday to friday and their tea at 7pm and pretty similar at weekends. They are out all day and if they come in earlier than normal to be ridden, etc they have extra hay. It baffles me how people roll up at the yard at gone 10am to feed their horses and then give them their tea ar 3.30pm so by 7 they have nothing left :( I always offer to feed but I appreciate they might want to do it themselves I just feel sorry for their horses as they have such a long boring night in their stables.

Maybe I'm too soft or I just worry to much? What times do you feed???

Any :p (puts tin hat on)

Weekdays they are fed between 5am- 8am and then again anytime from 4pm-8.30pm.

Weekends 8-10 AM, 4-7 PM.

None of the Horses have a strict routine, IMO keeping a Horse in a strict routine, causes problems. None of ours wait by the gate at a certain time, they are all happily grazing and not the least bit stressed by being fed at different times. They have never had colic or ulcers etc either.

Forgot to mention, on Fridays, if she is in, she gets extra hay as I know I will be up later in the morning, as I have a small lay in.

So are your horses out all the time? At the moment ours are still in at night, I wouldn't be as bothered if they were out I agree you can be a lot more flexible as they can be nibbling away but if they are in once its gone it's gone lol!

Mon -Fri breakfast 7am, in at 5pm to be worked stood with hay net, then feed at around 7ish or after lesson/work. Weekends 9am breakfast, then in at 6ish but earlier in winter

At the moment, yes.

But even when in, they still don't have a strict feed time. Mine gets a haynet (small holed hayent, to last her the day) anytime between the hours I've said already. At night she will get a bigger net (small holed again) and once that has run out she waits until morning. However she usually has some left, as I give a fair ammount.

mine only have one feed a day as they have very little hard feed but they have their hard feed about half 5 and if they were having breakfast it would be between half 8 and 9. I always leave mine with plenty of hay and i am not strict at all with their meal times.

Around 8.30am-10.00am but they live out so have grass to eat and they are never waiting by the gate to be fed. Evenings around 5.30pm-6.30pm.

Breakfast around 7.30 and dinner from 4.30 onwards depending what time i get too yard and what i'm doing. If i feed as early as 4.30 he goes get a extra big haynet or two as i feel bad that he might run out :o:)

Brekkie at 7 weekdays, 8 weekends. They go out in the field/dust paddocks during the day with hay given to the ones on nothing, they're at home so someone is usually around to give them a slice of hay to keep them busy. They come in late so that they have as much time as possible outside, so have their dinner at around 8:30 / 9pm - and then I go in and have mine! Overnight they have lots of hay/haylage to keep them munching as I don't like to think of them standing with nothing to eat for hours on end.

week days 6.45-7am tea 3pm mid winter when i bring them in early 4pm when it gets lighter.

weekends

just after 9am breakfast as week days dinner unless liveries ask me to leave dinner out
we are a stippler for routine, the horses thrive on it .
evening meal and evening hay gets put in am for the night unless liveries ask me to leave it outside and they give it just before they leave around 7.30pm- 8pm

They get fed when they get fed. No routine what-so-ever for the ones that live out, can't be doing with gatebangers, at all :)

Stalled horses are fed in the morning anytime between 6 and 8am, depends when I open the barn. Evening feeds are in their stalls when they come in, that's anytime between 4.30 and 8pm at the moment.

Minw are out now. They come into the stable for the teeniest feed needed to put a vit & min supplement in.
They come in for 2 reasons:
1) HP can be a but of a so & so to catch if he's only brought in for work.
2) they have access to a sliver of their summer field for a few hours a day from this week & it gets them out easily so I can shut the gate for the night.
Timing is whenever I get there after work, could be any time betweeen 6 & 8, or possibly earlier at weekend or son's day off. In winter they come in to the same non schedule.

I can't have a routine with my girl. I've tried but having two young kids and a husband with a demanding job means I need to be there for them and my horse comes second. She just has to fit in and around when I can get to her. In the winter she has to come in over night but I leave it as late as I can if I can so she's usually fed between 5pm-11pm and for breakfast its between 6.30am-10am. She's been out since mid march with just one feed a day so that's whenever really. Mosty evenings so I am able to ride but when the boys are in school and pre school then mornings are better.

Mine is out 24/7 however they are all brought in for about 4 hours in the morning to eat hay by the yard owner. He gets fed once a day when ever I get there and as I work shifts this varies between 07.30 to 15.30

Thanks for your replies everyone, really interesting to see how everyone has their different ways of doing things, my horses thrive on a routine which is why I am probably so regimental but I understand it isnt always that easy if you have kids, etc

Keep em coming!:)

Mine are fed 7.00am - 7.30am weekdays and 8.00am - 8.30am weekends, then they are all out and always have adlib hay/haylage. The 2 that are stabled overnight are brought in from around 5.00pm to 6.00pm and fed again with enough forage to have some left in the morning.
I don't worry too much if they are put away an hour later as they have hay/haylage available always in the paddocks.

8am on weekdays - no choice about the time because I do her on my way to work, and 8.45 at the latest at weekends because having inflicted a routine on her 5 days of the week I don't think its fair to expect her to accomodate much change on the other 2. Also I have other things to do at specific times on Saturday and Sunday mornings and if I want to fit all my stable jobs in before I go to do those, I need to be up at much the same time. Tea time is around 6pm all days for the same reasons. I give her extra hay in her night net before the days I'm going to a be a bit later. In a couple of weeks I hope she will be out 24/7 so tea time will be a bit more flexible.

Mine only get an evening feed.
They go out at 7am mon-friday and about 8-9am at a weekend.
Usually they come in at 5:30pm in the week, anything up to 8pm at a weekend.
They expect their tea when i fetch them in - whether its 5:30pm in the week or 8pm at a weekend which suits me perfectly.
They are perfectly happy with this as the routine is - come in - get fed! :)

Come summer they will be out 24/7 and will get a feed between 4-8pm just to get their supplement in.

Monday to Saturday 7:00 am for breakfast and then 5:00 pm for their tea. When their ridden it's usually 6:00 pm. On Sunday's I give myself half hour lie in so they have breakfast at 7:30 am and tea 5:30 pm. There out all day and in of the night, and have a small holed haynet which is rammed full of hay.

mine used to be fed at about 9 am and then be in for t between 4 and 5 in the middle of winter however she had toys and treats and had never eaten all the hay i left for her as she had tonnes so i didnt see a probs really.

normally mines fed around 6am, first person on yard feeds our little block, however on sundays it's normally 7ish.

In the evening's mines never fed before 5pm, simply because he'd have eaten it all in a couple of hours. So generally between 5-6pm, then lots of hay.

Kal gets breakfast around 6 a.m. (first up feeds and it's not me - hurrah!) . . . and he gets his tea anywhere between 4.30 and 6.00 p.m. depending on whether I have ridden. I do, though, make sure he has plenty of hay to keep him going, he gets his treat ball, and he does eat his bed (straw).

P

OK so mine live out, therefore I don't panic about the time I get there!! Weekday mornings check and small feed around 8.30am pm feed between 6 and 7pm later if I'm riding. Weekends are my lie in so they get fed between 9am and 10 am none of them are bothered and they have grass to munch. When my lad is stabled I leave a feed and some hay outside his stable so he's not stood waiting for me!

mine is in at night at the moment so fed small haylage net at 8am every day, then mucked out groomed and ridden and turned out about 10...in at 6.30pm to small feed and soaked haynet.....when she is out 24/7 she comes in at 8 to small feed, groomed and ridden and turned back out about 9.30ish....just gets checked at night (no feed)usually between 6 and 7pm(and field is poo picked)

Our yard has a feed rota, so all are fed between half 8 and 9 every day. I refuse to feed before half four, as mine are in at night atm and they'd have to wait too long to be fed again. I usually aim to give tea between 5 and 7pm

6 am, 12 noon, 6.30-7 pm and 11 pm. Ad lib hay and lots of turnout. We find it easier to give plenty of small feeds to the racehorses

When in at night over winter breakfast between 6.30 & 7.30 weekdays, wkend between 7.30 & 8. Both only have tiny token feeds of hifi tho, & ad lib hay over night. Tea at 6ish, maybe later in march when nights a bit lighter.
Now out 24/7, breakfast around 8 wkdays & tea & some hay around 7 or 8 in the evening. Wkends 9-10. Once the oldie doesn't need rugging at night then no fixed routine, won't have hay much longer either.
Routines don't bother me, but one on our yard has the same routine as mine wkdays but when stabled at wkends he's left till between 11 & 12 & back in for tea at 3 ish. Usually out of hay by 6 & by morning has eaten his entire straw bed except a barrow of muck.
