....... and can you do it yourself by hand or is it a job for a contractor?

you can lime anytime! but best done in the autumn. wouldnt fancy trying to do by hand as you could well need a few tonnes!! (the soil analysis should tell you how much lime you need to get the ph correct) best applied just before rain is due to help wash it in!
