I read in Your Horse Magazine that after worming the worms are killed inside the horse and they are dead when they come out the other end, and therefore the horse doesn't need to be stabled after.

But then I read in a different magazine(cant remember which one) that after worming you should always keep the horse stabled for 24 hours after.

Which is correct?
At my yard the horses have to be stabled for 2 days after worming and can only be ridden/lunged in the paddock.

My vet told me the same as what you read in Your Horse Magazine. It was only the old style wormers that used to expel live worms.

However I keep mine in to check for signs of colic, one of mine regularly gets gas colic after worming.

Horse Magazine is right as far as I know (I was only corrected on this the other day).
As far as I know there is no reason to stable a horse for worming.
However I do know someone who has said that when the wormer come out of the horse in the poo it can potentially wreck the grass, and it takes up to 2 days for the horse to digest the wormer so she kept hers in for 2 days to be wormed..

My old yard used to keep them in for 48 hrs after worming; I always thought it was a case of them expelling dead worms too so never really saw the point. I guess it gave you the opportunity to have a nosey through the poos to see if anything came out though!!

My vet told me if they are usually out, then turn them back out after giving wormer as to keep them in, if they are not used to being in, would be likely to give them a colic. ie change of routine, etc.

So, I always chuck mine back out after giving wormer, but I always worry!

The worms are dead - so just manage your horse normally. It is good practice to poo pick after worming, as you don't really want the chemicals expelled in the poo going into the local waterways, though. That's more environmental benefit that horse benefit though.

However if you read the gumf that comes with Pramox it states

Environmental safety
In order to limit the impact of moxidectin on dung fauna, and due to insufficient data regarding environmental risk of praziquantel, horses should not be turned out onto pasture within 3 days of treatment

I have always just thrown mine out after worming until I was bored and actually bothered to read the leaflet...

Well, I wormed with Pramox on Sat and just turned them out as usual! I poo-picked on Sunday morning (as I do every day) and can happily report only dead worms seen and no damage to fauna! I think I'd have no stables left if I kept them in for 3 days!!

i worm at night time leave in over night then turn out in morning but if your horses are out 24/7 do it that way but make sure you poo pick first thing in morning!

There is no reason to keep a horse (or donkey for you) stabled after worming.
