My mare has been diagnosed with kissing spine. I have her back at home at the moment having opted for the injections initially. She has 7 impinging vertabrae and 4 would need to be removed if she were operated on. According to the vet she was born with this condition. She is now 10.

I have owned her for 2 years and in that time realised that she does have issues which I now know are back related. If I am honest I would like to give my mare every chance but I am terrified of putting her through the op. She doesn't like being in the stable at the best of times and I know that there are two options post op. One is to follow Dr Svend Kolds method of rehabilitaion and the other is 6 months paddock rest after the wound has healed. My problem is the commitment from me to see her through as I work full time and have a family etc, as selfish as this may sound.

I have heard good and bad reports from people who's horses have had the operation as is the way but my mare is not unrideable. She does object to having the girth done up but not me putting the saddle on or getting on. She hacks happily but does feel stiff initially with the schooling but again she comes good. Does anybody know of a yard that takes horses post op with this condition that would be able to help with the re hab and take the pressure off me but at the same time give my horse a good chance? Decisions, decisions! At the moment the mare is happily roaming around her paddock without a care in the world!

Hiya sorry for sounding dim - but if its paddock rest after the op - can't she just be out all the time? What would you need to do in addition to normal 'horse at grass' routine?
