I have a spanish horse whos really good at dressage but will not have metal in his mouth of any kind hes in nathe or bitless has very very soft mouth. I want him to go very far but cant get a metal snaffle in let alone double bridle. Can you wrap a bit in that rubber stuff is that dressage legal

You do not need a double until you are doing PSG or above so stick with what he is happy to go in for now you can use a rubber or nathe type of bit, no need for wrapping a metal one.

Just looked at the rules and you can ride PSG and above in a snaffle at national level.

Bits must be in the same condition as when they were purchased so no you can't wrap the bit but you can use the synthetic bits.

Do you know why the horse won't accept a bit? - it may not be the metal but may be that below the skin on the bars are bone spurs. A friend of mine has one such horse and this was only found after the jaw was X rayed - she rides the mare in a bitless and horse is very happy. Became a demented lunatic the moment a bit was put in her mouth.

cheers i have no worries then. Iv only just starting doing dressage as used to jump so real novice at the rules. I know years ago you wasnt allowed any copper or rubber but im going back twenty years when most these new materials werent around

I dont know the real cause why he wont have metal in his mouth but hes had bad past Iv tryed a snaffle covered in honey or mint something nice he just rears and rears and just seems to have major panic attack and trying to take it out is just as bad havent been able to ride him in one yet as just headshakes and rears until removed to the point of being dangerous. Its such a shame

If you go to the bit bank you can buy a nathe weymouth and bradoon, they are not cheap though £155 & £75
If you know he objects so violently to a metal bit then to me they way forward would be to stop trying.
Good luck with your dressage.

Dizz (DWB) isn't happy in any metal bit. Got silly to the point of scaring me. Now she's in a rubber Mullen mouth and is much, much better (was no good bit less either - just sat down and looked most affronted).

Good to know can get the nathe if we were ever to get that far!
