I am in a bit of a dilemma at the moment over jobs,; I have one which I am happy with, at a local livery yard/riding school where I get to do lots of riding (mainly schooling and fittening the yard horses), teaching and also have some lessons myself with a good trainer who is there. I get paid a reasonable amount but do have to pay livery to keep my own horse there, but the facilities are very good so it is worth it.

I've worked/helped at this yard since I was 12 (now 21). But for the last 3 years I have been at uni (doing an equine degree) and while I was there I worked at another yard (which sadly i didn't discover until my final year:( ), a livery yard owned by a lady who does a lot of competing in dressage, SJ and eventing and used to take me to shows and clinics with her. She didn't need me to work over summer as all her horses lived out (hence why i have come home), but she offered me a job there for this winter, starting in october and has offered me free livery and accomodation as well as lots of trips to shows, lessons, riding etc. It sounds really good and I really enjoyed working there but it would be 7 days a week (but with a long lunch break so not solid all day work), my wages wouldn't be as much as they are now and it's all the way in nottingham and I live in surrey so I'd hardly get to see most of my friends and worry I'd get lonely and possibly bored up there (and probably knackered!), but I do think it's a great oppurtunity as I'd get to ride nicer horses than I do now and would get to compete a lot more so my riding would probably come on a lot. But I do enjoy the job I have now and if I save up long enough (see my other post), i could eventually afford my own transport so could take myself to competitions and clinics rather than having to rely on other people. I would love to one day be a top dressage rider and some people tell me I should look for a job at a dressage yard but I worry I wouldn't get much riding there (I imagine the rider will school most of their horses, I'd probably only get to hack them out? (Don't know but this is what I've heard)) whereas this job in Nottingham at least is a known entity, I really like the lady who owns the yard as well as everyone else there and it would seem a shame to miss the oppurtunity, but I still have reservations and do love my current job, even though it probably won't progress my career very much. I just don't know what to do! Sorry that this is such a long and confused post, any advice greatly appreciated!

The new job sounds like a great opportunity but is a huge commitment re: 7 days a week. Would you still be needed in summer?

From what you say it seems that you recognise that it's not the best position for you right now - why not stick with the yard you're at for now, but keep an eye on yard and groom, HH etc. for more suitable opportunities that would allow you to pursue your goals?

Perhaps something like http://www.sheepcote.co.uk/ - they are looking for working students at the moment and you have the opportunity for daily riding + extra depending on your riding ability.

You've taken your degree to improve your equestrian career, so you know you can't really stay in your current yard if you want to progress. This other job sounds hard - 7 days a week - but if you had your own horses at home you would have to do them 7 days a week as well. If not this job, you really need to look for something else. Good luck in whatever you choose to do, and I know it is very hard to leave somewhere where you are happy and have been a long time.
