As usual I am needing a bit of good old HHO guidance.:D

At the weekend I moved yards, after 7 years being at the same one, due to yard politics and bullying. The new yard is only 3 miles down the road from the old one, and when I spoke to my farrier he was happy enough to come to the new yard.

Now, I have had this farrier for the last 7 years and know full well what his non-existant time keeping is like. While I was at my old yard it wasn't a problem as my horse was one in a long list, but recently it has been that he would leave her till last and then come up with some excuse not to do her that day and promises that he would come back the next day. Unfortunatly the next day was usually either 2 or 3 days later or the next week when he had another batch, and again she was left till last.

Does this make sense?

My mare was due for shoeing yesterday, and surprise surprise he didn't turn up. Now I am considering the whole new yard, new farrier senario as being a pidgeon toed TB she needs attention every 6 weeks, as any longer and the foot disintergrates.

So how long do I give him before I ring another? I wondered about giving him until the weekend, the benefit of the doubt and all, but her shoes are already very loose.

Oh, I wouldn't be giving him any more chances I'm afraid. I'm amazed he's lasted this long.

I'd be getting recommendations and finding a new one.

agree with the others, i think he has already used up his chances.

I would look at the feet of other horses on the yard and ask the owners of horses with good feet for their farrier's number.

Right then.

I have the number of one farrier that who I am already familiar with that works locally and the new yard also has another one that I am not familiar with. So I will have a look at the other feet on the yard and then make a decision as to which one to call.

Thank you all keeping me straight:D:D

i can totally sympathise with you. Have a similar problem with my farrier, he did a very very good job with my tricky mare who was terrifeied of farriers and had awful feet and lost shoes left right and centre! he shod her well but her feet would often become awful because she had went without a lost shoe for 7 days! nightmare!

a local farrier offered to help me with lost shoes and he has been great, always answers the phone and usually available the same day but at least i know when he will be there. i can be flexible so dont mind them being late so long as they are there! but my farrier will often not respond to my messages for around a week. which is no use if your horse has rubbish feet.

i lost my little mare this summer and have a new horse and have also moved yards and dont know what to do i think i will change farrier but i really trust mr unreliable so can appreciate how you feel. good luck :)
