What to do old dog going senile

It’s very sad because and there will always be that feeling like maybe I let her go too soon but I have to live with that. The house seems so quiet I keep thinking that I see her around. She never even went in kennels in 15 years the longest I ever was away was three days.

Was total devastation this morning and I had to wait for the vet till one. I felt better after it had been done and now just numb. I am sure she will be looked for and missed for a very long time. She went to sleep in my arms so relaxed he did it much better than I have had it happen before.

My 15 year old JRT was pts last year due to dementia. Physically he was well in himself but was just starting to forget to eat on the odd day and would pace for ages at a time. Fortunately he was never aggressive but no longer interacted with either us or our other dogs. It was a very tough decision but we felt that his quality of life was too compromised and it seemed to worry him when he got 'stuck' in a corner. This was a little dog who had been super smart. Like you, it broke my heart but I do feel it was the right thing to do for him.

So sorry that you had to make this decision but I am sure it was the right thing to do.

Thank you its so sad the vet just rang me to get her ashes can't say I am looking forwards to that trip..

I am going through exactly the same with my foxie ( 13yrs ) ..........physically can still go for a walk etc but mentally senile, anxious attacks and just howls when not sleeping......he has had 2 long episodes recently where he was basically in a lost state.............its heart-breaking but my vet also quality of life and pts xxx hugs xxx

I think from reading this thread that is what happened to my Gordon setter, the sudden fear, pacing and panting, from behaving normally.
I thought perhaps she had had a bleed on her brain or something, but it could well have been sudden dementia, as she had shown some slight signs when I first had her. I also made the hard decision, so feel for you. Its not easy doing the right thing
