Buy another pony or not?
My 8 year old sons saintly pony Poppy (12.2) has got lami - badly, concussive we think as nothing has changed in her management and shes a skinny min. So shes on box rest for who knows how long.
Now I already have his next pony but shes (at a broad 13.2) a bit big, a bit green and wasn't really intended for him for another year (I have broken her in).
I have just been offered a wonderful pony, a section C, for £1000. 12 years old and impeccably mannered. Shes only 12.1 but much broader than Poppy. Do I buy her as a stop gap? Do you think theres a market for these small cobs as I would (Poppy permitting) want to sell her in the spring.

If you can afford it, what have you got to lose? The market will be hotter in Spring than heading into winter and a well mannered pony will always find a PC home.

Go for it!

ps how old is saintly Poppy? Early signs of Cushings?? Insulin intolerance?

St Poppy is 20 and has Equine Metabolic syndrome, which I gather is a precursor of cushings so could be. I should have asked vet...will phone him.
Mmmm I think it may be worth a look, I have an empty stable and a barn full of hay and straw!

I would have thought the section C would sell well especially if it is good and has been out and about a bit over winter. You could probably put the word out over winter that you will probably be looking to sell within the year.

It is also back up incase poppy is off longer than anticipated.

But is the youngster really too much for him or could he manage??

Shes fantastic 95% of the time but if she gets scared she 'runs through the bridle' and I don't think he could cope with that. She also gets a bit overexcited jumping sometimes and throws in a buck.
Also, my mare is in foal so I am riding the youngster, so if he got on her I wouldn't have anything to ride with him.
I could lie to my OH and tell him Section C is a loan and beg/borrow/steal money to buy her from someone else...

Sorry to hear Poppy has lami. She has been doing so well since you bought her

Are you 'happy' to deceive P and can you keep it up?
Obviously I know you would rather not go behind his back a little.
If you are happy and know you can pull it off, then go for it

PS, Hope Dixie is doing well. Have you sold Gwin?

I am a very good liar.

Until I have a burst of honesty!

Trouble is you can't tell which way he'd go...at the end of the day he has never really said NO to me. I would confess before I bought her but I can have her on trial first, which is good. And shes roan - my favourite colour!

Dixie is fine thank you, had her shoes off on Monday and is so footy is having fronts put back on next Monday.

I sold Gwin to be a pet, so he fell on his feet.

I don't know if I said, but I loved your pictures of Pebbles. Gorgeous and sooo fluffy.
