Difficult one here. In the field opposite my hose there are two very tiny and very old donkeys. There are not thin, have trimmed hooves and have water (I think). However, I've been noticing one of them having difficulty walking over the last couple of days in that he steps high at the back (almost like stringhalt), this is not stopping him grazing. So I went to investigate today and found that he has a little rug on (very old one) and it only had one leg strap so they had attached side to the fillet string d-ring and the other side to the leg strap d-ring and as a result his poor little back leg is bald and rubbed. I adjusted this and also adjusted the cross surcingles as they had them the wrong way around (back to back and front to front). Did similar for the other donkey also. I also noticed that the first donkey had rug rubs on his neck/withers which although no broken skin looked pretty sore. they have very matted hair and slightly runny eyes and on the whole look pretty mangy. I sort of know the owners and they are nice people but have no idea about how to keep them although they have had them for several years. I think that they just need a bit of guidance and the donkeys heed a bit of TLC (the little one did little tiny bray to me as I approached bless her). What should I do?

Perhaps approach the owners and offer help with them but be diplomatic, they sound lovely little things I love donkeys.

Totally agree with this ring DS in Devon, they will phone your local volunteer to get in touch with you. Highly unlikely they will give out their volunteers name.
Or look on line and contact the area welfare officer
http://www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/welfareofficers

They have donkey care packs and will offer advice and keep an eye on the situation

Thanks for the info everyone. Have just spoken to the donkey sanctuary and they will visit and offer help to the owners with some of the issues above. They said the stringhalt type thing is a common arthritic thing with old donkeys but he may just need a little bit of painkillers. Thanks everyone.

Agree re Donkey Sanctuary, you will have a local welfare officer who will go out and have a chat. You will need to advise them of what you have done with the rugs so they can teach the owners the correct way.
