What to do when Archie arrives home from horspital, advice please

Fingers crossed and all being well Archie may return home this week. I have told the horsepital to keep him until his eye is as good as it can be as I don't want him coming home, me having to manage it still and him take a backward turn.

Anyway, when he returns I am worried about how to introduce him back into living out 24/7 as he has now lived in, pretty much 24 hours a days since being at Liphook, out of the elements. I do have a stable which I can use but would like to, ideally, get him living out full time.

One of the reasons I want him out is that I only get to the yard once a day as I live quite far away and due to being out of work need to keep petrol costs down and also he is so messy and also because he gets box crazy. He may have calmed down and no longer be box crazy so this may or may not be an issue.

I was thinking to put him out with plenty of insulation on, from ears to tail, two feeds and ad lib hay, as I would have, unless it is absolutely torrential rain forcast.

What would you do?

How long has he been at the vets for?

It's amazing how quickly they adapt when they get home. My horse was at the vets for 10 weeks 2 yrs ago, and then was moved to a new place to rehabilitate. He was fine with lots of hay to keep him busy as he was on box rest for months afterwards.

I'd wrap your boy up well and leave him out with ad lib hay and perhaps haylage if he's allowed it too as a nice treat.

My mare was in Leahurst for 2 weeks 2 years ago after displacement colic then perferated ulcers. She came home and went straight out to grass and the vets said it was the best thing we could of done as she could just relax and be a horse so it helped her body heal. She was on Gastroguard every day for 4 weeks, again this was given to her in the field to minimise stress and she was out with ponies she was familiar and comfortable with.
When she went back to be re-scanned she was completely clear and the vets were astonished by her recovery.
If your lad lived out before he went then he will probably adapt well and if anything be happier back out, especially if he has been in at the vets for a long time.
