My shetland's just had a very nasty fall, went over backwards after rearing up. Had the vet out, got him checked, and have been told to leave him in stable for a few days on bute.

Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable/ safer? Have made up a thick bed, left him with hay and water and am checking on him a lot. He's still very dopey and slow and unsteady on his feet, but I'm such a nervous mummy, want to be sure he's as happy as can be right now. Any suggestions?

Okay, thank you for saying so, I get so worried about sensitive things like this, always get the feeling I've missed out something vital so it's reassuring to hear I've ticked all the right boxes. He's on his own right now, no others around him, he's in the stable kept for sick horses that need peace and quiet so all fine there :) Thank you x

Worth you keeping a clip-board or notebook by the stable & noting time you check & what your observations are on the pony & what he is doing/consuming/drinking & what the bed is like (in case he has been walking or digging etc and if he has had a wee or turned out). Very handy in case you need to refer back for any changes. Note down each time how pony is looking.
If in ANY doubt, phone your vet for advice if pony worries you for any reason, as I am sure they will have told you to anyway

If he is in on his own is he likely to become upset once he comes round a bit more? Might be an idea to bring a companion in for company.

Alright thank you, will try the clipboard idea :)

I know, but for the night the vet said to keep him on his own. I'll move my quieter mare over in the morning to graze outside his stable, but he's usually happy enough on his own during normal days, so don't imagine he'll mind too much either way. By morning, I'm sure his best friend will have made her way into the stable anyway, there's a chicken that's in love with him who sleeps in there - out of the way so she doesn't get stood on accidentally! - and he's always happy to have her there with him to keep him company ;)
