I'm planning on going hunting with a friend for the first time in a couple of weeks but I'm not sure what to do with the mane of the pony we are taking. He is traditional and his mane is rather long, I know he should be plaited but they would like footballs if I tried to do normal plaits so would it be acceptable to do either a running plait or long plaits hanging down?

A running plait always looks tidy and practical - I think long plaits hanging down would look like you forgot to finish traditional plaits! There are people who hunt locally who leave their traditional's mane hanging loose and it just looks scruffy.

A running plait is neat and workmanlike. Long single plaits could catch if you are pushing through scrub - which is the basic reason for plaiting in the first place!
