What to do with old hats?

Obviously old hats can't be sold. I don't really like putting them in a bin either because I worry somebody will fish them out and they'll end up on Ebay. Are there any recycling schemes around? I've got quite a collection now.

They can be sold, we recently sold one of ours on eBay! It hadn’t been in a fall and was in excellent condition. Had loads of bids on it!

I did give one to a friend for her younger child but only because it’s not been in a fall etc and still meets standards too x

When I was teaching young children, I used to put my old riding hats in the dressing-up box. I also had hobby horses for outdoor learning

I cut the straps off first, then they're no use to anyone if they're fished out

I’d drill holes in them, spray paint them, buy some chain and recycle them into hanging baskets!

You could hang them up and see if anything wants to make a nest in them.

Hang up in quiet high spots in stables, sheds, barns, we find robins and sparrows in particular love them for nests. Easy to shake out the horse hair they add for a cosy bed at the end of the season, I usually disinfect then as well so all ready for the next spring.

Slightly left field, but if you have any local theatres, ask them if they want them for props or costumes.

I buy a new hat after a fall but keep the previous one to wear when helping on the yard. I took off the silk and wrote "YARD" on the hat with a black waterproof marker.
