I have a 3 year old pony - he is a 3 year old tricoloured gelding. Currently used as a companion to my other youngster. He's had tack on and been lightly lunged and long reined. He's also been shown inhand and loads and travels well. He is great with my 2 year old son (who regularly sits on him and is led about), but due to lack of small jockey to start him, he hasn't had anything else done with him. That was no issue as he was used as a companion. He is the perfect companion - he was left alone every day when he was a companion to my ridden horse and was happy to be left alone when my other youngster was taken to the futurity (involved an over night stay). He just happily grazes away as if he hasn't noticed.
But now I no longer need a companion and I am not sure what to do with him. I don't know if he'll sell as the market is so poor so not sure whether to advertise him. I am considering advertising him for loan to either a home who wants to start him and have him as a ridden pony or just use him as a companion (he is small and cheap to keep and as I said, the perfect companion). I'd rather loan him as I took him on as a unhandled colt with worms and overgrown feet and he has turned into a loving gentle pony who is bold and friendly so would love to keep an eye on him. I wouldn't want him back at any point really, just that if I loan him I can ensure his future at least. But how do I find a loan home that will be long term/permanent and not a home that needs a temporary companion? I suppose if he is backed and used as a kids pony, when outgrown he can find a new rider, but rather he was passed about as little as possible. Where is best to advertise horses like this for loan? And if you took a pony on loan, how often would you see reasonable for owner to visit?
