My boys mane is just unmanageable and it looks awful. Top end is long bottom half is shorter where it has been rubbed off under previous years rugs.

I use a running plait if we go anywhere but I can't seem to get this tidy due to the varying thicknesses throughout the mane.

I absolutely wont hog but I can't seem to pull it reasonably either. As it grows ou it ends up sticking all over the place.

Any ideas or if you pull or use thinning combs etc......how!

Thank you!

I just thinned a thick mane with a tail rake, it wad about £16 but did do a very good job of thinning out a big thatch of mane without looking unnatural

It was dead easy to use - no harder than a brush and the pony didn't mind at all and he is feral at the best of times

I used it as a quick fix as he was getting hot but was so impressed I used it to tidy up the rail of my other pony who rubbed the top of his tail

The amount of hair that comes out is surprising so keep standing back to look at progress

My goat tells me that the discarded pony hair was very tasty

sorry to resurrect this thread but does anyone have any other ideas? My sec D's mane is sooo thick and coarse. Ive tried a tail rake and although lots came out, its still just SO thick. Ive tried pulling it but it just gets short, and thick :(

Mine has a pulled mane and looks much smarter it went almost as soon as I got him on full loan :p the top of it I have to "showjumper" it as he just knobs at me trying to pull it there. It is fairly thick but then I don't need to plait it so I don't really worry :)

Forgot to add I don't pull it too short it's about 3 inches long as he looks silly if it's too short, as it just sticks up like a mohican!

Um.... could you post a picture of the mane I wonder???

I've got a Welsh D mare on loan and I just got one of the "wonder blade" thingey's which is basically like a thinner, and just cut into the mane with it about an inch from the bottom just to level it out a bit. That way it looks natural but gets rid of the frizzy bits and tidies it up a bit; owner doesn't want the mane trimmed too much anyway so after consulting with her this is what I do.
