What to do with this tail? *pic*

So Pippa has ruined her what was a beautiful and long tail...

Since she's started rubbing I've washed every day with water. I have tried wound powder and sudocrem but both have failed.


Any recipes to try to cure the itchiness and to soothe? Any products which I could try?

All answers greatly appreciated!
 
oh my we have been rubbing, i have been using some leovet product on my horses tail think its no rub, also keep a fly rug on him with big tail flap and slap fly gel all over his tail under the tail flap and when he is in the stable. Wonder if all the wetting will make it itch more?

Don't have a clue:( I've washed her 'bits' and her tail is clean. She is up to date with worming, and she rarely gets bitten by flies
 
If you have a regular worming program then it's not likely to be pin worms.

It's most likely a fungal infection which is very itchy - Wash with Nizoral shampoo - dilute with hand hot water, lather up well and work into tail down to the skin.

My mare gets a really itchy tail and a couple of seasons ago rubbed it almost bare - still growing to full length almost 2 years later. She managed to remove most of her tail almost overnight. Nizoral stopped the itching and since then the moment her tail looks bushy at the top a sure sign she's been rubbibg it I wash it! Stops her rubbing straight away.

We use boots hemorrhoid cream on rubbed tails soothes the itching and also helps hair regrowth

do get some funny looks though when we stock buy from boots --but it works
 
My mare did this and had no tail left last year, I put Benzyl Benzoate on to treat her itchiness- Don't know what the cause is for your horse or if it would work the same but I call it the 'magic lotion' it just stops her discomfort immediatly. I also just pulled the whole top section short and let it grow out again together. Tail is still full and thick this year with regular application of the stuff :) It is for sweetich I believe but she doesn't appear to itch or rub anywhere else much - it was only the tail!
 
Hello all! Just an update ...

She has pinworm :( The vet will be coming tuesday to bring me the stuff to get rid!

This will work on your mare too if she has pin worm - Benzyl Benzoate is an insecticide.

Vaseline smeared around the anus will also stop the little b*****s too. Do you use wormers with Ivermectin in them as this will also kill them.
 
I've just found out that a horse has pinworms on my yard. Prescribed a double dose of worming paste - apparently pin worms are v difficult to get rid of. Actually was shown a photo of said horses bum with worm! yuk!!!
 
monikirk - that is really interesting - my vet here in NZ was quite surprised when I took a worm sample in to him to identify - "Good HEavens" he said "It's a Pin worm - you don't see many of those around these days - modern wormers really work well on them"

The sample came from my newly arrived 6 month old Clydesdale - now 9yrs old!

It was the first worming she had ever had and what appeared from the other end over the next 48hrs was an amazing sight - looked like spagetti and meatballs! so many round worm, bots, Pin worms and tapes but no red worm.
 
Tnavas: here in the UK the wormers barely reach the rear end so therefore don't kill the pinworms :(

Oooo that sounds quite interesting to be honest:D At least there was no red worm!
