Ok this has the possibility of turning rather long so I apologise if it does!
Pharaoh died just over a year ago, since then I have gained a mini pony (who is now on loan and having a lovely life), sold a pony to a brilliant family, ridden ex racers and broken ponies in, all through this time I have wanted another horse, and preferably an ex racer, over 4 and a gelding. I have the opportunity of buying a 2 and a half year old pony to make around 14hh and she's a mare! The people who currently own her are the people that I sold the pony to earlier on in the year, they are lovely and honest and I know everything I want to know.
Now for the serious bit...
I really, really like her, she's got character, a lovely nature and I feel I could work with her BUT she is never going to be the 16hh that I would like, ok I am only 5ft3 and 7 stone so I will hardly squash her. I have just started three a-levels (english lang, law and biology) with the view of taking up maths next year so my work load could get quite heavy. I couldn't do mornings due to college times but have time in the evenings and unlike the tb I do want, this little one could easily live out and would be cheaper to keep (always a huge bonus!). I would be thinking of doing something along the lines of doing very little with her over the winter, just bit her, get her used to walking out in hand, brushing/general fiddling about - just very basic things, then come summer, back her with the view of turning her away the following winter - would that would be sensible?
The next thing is... how do I know I don't just like her because she's a horse? I had an extremely good relationship with Pharaoh, he was always 'the' one and I know I will never have the same relationship with another horse but I could have an equally good one, just not exactly the same as obviously every horse is different. I really do like her and spent time with her today, she was so lovely, I found her itchy spots and she was grooming me as well (which was sweet, Pharaoh didn't do that).
Basically what do I do? How do I know if I really do like her? Would I be stupid in taking on a youngster now? Especially as I do want an ex racer (which, realistically wouldn't be sensible right now as it would need far more work than she would right now) but I suppose it's always a possibility in the future. Help!
