i have a 3yr old irish draught x zangersheider mare she was very ill over xmas with a bacterial/viral infection. although shes made a full recovery and is putting weight back on nicely i was wondering what i could feed her to help with her growth and ensure shes getting all the correct vits and mins. shes currently out 24/7 , 2 scoops of coolmix a day and 3 scoops of chaff a day (split in to 2 feeds) plus 1 sec hay at lunch and 3 secs hay at night. she was on youngstock mix until last week instead of coolmix. i work her inhand, take her on the roads, lunge and long rein her. i would say 2-3 hrs work a week. her worming and vaccs are all upto date too. Do i wait and see what the spring grass does or gradually change her feed again? or add a suppliment ? any suggestions would help thanks.

when i bought my 3 year old he was a very thin and very poor wee things. he is an ID X arab, i went to buy him blue chip and the woman in the shop suggested feeding Dodson and Horrell Suregrow and i swear by it. Made such a difference and it ensured that he was getting all the vit and mins that he needed to help him grow without blowing his brains out. I would definitely recommend it.

I agree with above. As she is still a youngster she needs something with a high quality protein level that a youngstock feed will supply. This is esp important if she has been poorly.

huge thanks she was on d&h mare and youngstock for 2 months then i weaned her onto cool mix which doesnt have the calcium in she needs for growth, i've looked at the sure grow and that looks like it has the right vits and mins so i will give that a go, thank you.:):D

You will prob find that the spring grass makes a difference. i did! I still kept him on the suregrow tho despite the grass as he wouldnt get all his vits from the grass. good luck!

:D i have also ordered some equimins dicalcium phosphate to help with strengthening her bones, thanks will do some before and after pics when shes bulked up a bit more too xx:)
