I have a 5yr old female golden lab, who weighs about 40kg

What should I be feeding her?
Are tinned foods bad?
She is currently on bog standard dog food(raitoned) and wondering what is best to encourage weight loss.
She also has arthritis in all four legs, so would be interested in a food to help this?

I have a black Labrador and its not food you want but a daily brisk walk for 5 mins increaseing to over 30 minutes. Labrador will eat anything and everything and we in Wales have a food company that does a special mixture to combat the effects of athritis its a bit price but with excersise it does work.

she is exercised, should have said.
Runs about our place all day and walked in the evenings for a good 20mins ,incl. lots of swimming!

I have a chocolate lab bitch who is 25 kg, (only one year old though.) When she was a puppy we had problems with allergies so the vet recommended Well-Beloved, it cost a bomb but has stopped her allergies so when you take vet bills into account it works out cheaper. Anyways, she is in fab condition on this food, really trim, (however we only feed her about 70% of what it says to on the bag.)

if she gets plenty of exercise but is still chubby, then shes eating to much, just cut it back by about 20%, and see how she goes. glucosamine is helpful with arthritis.

Definitely. And cod liver oil capsules, too. Her arthritis should ease as she loses some weight.

I, too, feed slightly less than the required amount of food. If the stomach "tuck up" starts to disappear, and she loses muscle -- especially in the lazy height of summer -- I up my dog's cardio exercise rather than cut back further.

Ideally she needs to be about 25 to 31 Kg
She not only needs to cut down on her food intake (including any goodies you may be giving her) but also upping her exercise.
She's young to have arthritis, and the extrataneous weight she's carrying won't help.
Also, if you're feeding her oil supplements, these can be high in calories.
I'd try a weight loss programme with your vet nurse, who will give you advice and free weighing, and also try a dry feed as it takes longer to eat.
Finally, don't blame yourself. Labs are prone to putting on weight, especially bitches that have been spayed.
Good luck x

Thanks.
She is currently on v. restricted dry food nad metcam, and that's it.
The very occasional (like once a week)
Trying to avoid supplements for now, as they are difficult to feed in our house!
Thanks again!

My lab has nature diet. He is on 2 per day with plenty of walks and his weight stays a constant 28kg. I also give him tesco value cornflakes to add some extra crunch and a splash of veggie oil for his coat

It is hard to restrict a lab's intake, but it just has to be done! My black lab is slim and fit, but he comes on an hour's hack with me every day so he has to run hard in order to get far enough ahead to do pheasant hunting in the bushes! He also does agility and trains for 20 minutes or so every day we can. All this on 300 gm working dog rings a day. (He gets working dog rings because he does work!) Have you tried cider vinegar for your girl's arthritis? It really does work.
