what to feed a laminitic shetland?

i have a shetland that suffered with laminitis last summer. what should i be feeding him? i soak his hay for 2 or more hours and he stays in every night, he is out in the day from about 12pm til 4pm on weekends and 8am til 4pm on weekdays.
 
My 10hh laminitic prone gets a handful of laminitic feed mix a small carrot, chaff and a general vitamin and mineral supplement in the morning. He has hay and access to a Red Rock lick and grass (not at all lush)
 
Try and stick to High fibre, low sugar/starch feeds. Allen and Page L-mix is ok for Laminitics as is something like D&H High Fibre nuts.
My old boy (30 yr old ish, 13.2hh Native type) has a mix of thiswith Allen and Page fast fibre.

what is the name of your mix? i use the new alfalfa chaff with no mollases (cant remember the name of it) but just struggling with what mix to feed..
 
i'd soak his hay for much longer than that to leach out all available goodness, never let him out if the grass is frosty, have him unrugged all the time if you don't already, and perhaps give him HiFi Lite. No carrots, no apples, just cuddles instead! Maybe a v low-sugar vit and min balancer if your vet thinks it's necessary.

ok how long would you recommend soaking hay for?! his old owner had him rugged at all times but since he has came to us he has ripped his outdoor rug so he is now naked at all times and loves it! i cant remember the name of the chaff i use (will look tomorrow) but its the one with no mollasses in, i was recommended it for him. oops gave him a carrot today but will stop that lol! thanks for your help!! :)
 
I would feed Fast Fibre and to add interest, Non Molassed Hi Fi. As previous poster said soak hay for much longer.
 
why does he need to be fed at all? my sec A and sec D live out on rough/sparse grazing with no hard feed and get a slice of hay each a day. They look good on fresh air!
