Hi, I have a EMS horse that is currently on a mug of top spec anti lam and a handful of top spec zero and a handful thunder brooks herbal chaff twice a day. She is out muzzled at night and has a soaked net in the day while she's stabled. I am happy with her weight but she seems to be lacking energy. She is fit, I ride as advised by the vet 6 days a week a mix of schooling, jumping, lunging and hacking - all light work. She has had mild lami in the autumn on a couple of occasions. I avoid soya and alfalfa as think it makes her footy. Is there any people would recommend that would give her a bit more "sparkle". She's a Welsh cob, aged 17. TIA

I am going to jump on this as well, I have an ex-racer who is soooo laid back. I am very barefoot pro although he is shod in front and he also cribs so I would be looking for something no molasses and low suger/starch.

In regards to your horses I would copra would be a good choice to try and also some kwikbeet and linseed. I find this is the 'base' feed I use for my guy and it helps maintain his weight being a poor doer.

you may already have done this - but given her age, the lethargy and the autumn laminitis history first thing I would do is to get her tested for PPID (Cushings).

I have a 'recovering lamaintic'. He has an extremely severe episode two years ago (toxic, caused by aytpical myopathy), and came back to work last November.

He's in full work, soaked hay at night, muzzled in the day and we too found him a little 'flat'. He has (on nutritionist advice) D&H ultimate balancer, chopped straw and rapeseed oil - currently about 300ml a day. He is ok with alfa A oil, so gets a handful in his feed and also a handful before he is ridden. This combo seems to be working.

He can if necessary get a handful of whole oats, but we will avoid this as long as possible. We can increase the oil and also add propell if needed.

Its a fine balance to keep them right, but worth the effort.

Tested negative for cushings so not that. Will up her salt intake as it has been warm. Will look into linseed as well, assume won't put on weight in quantum fed?
