i will prob still need to feed him for summer but not sure what to feed as he goes off his feed-and i cant leave it with him as he is with others. He takes AGES to eat so i cant really stand with him as he wont finish it-so basically i need to give him a small feed that he likes but still keeps weight on!!any help greatly appreciated!

in winter, with mine i'm just going to feed her a little chaff and her forage balancer, a very tiny amount, and hay, we have 24 hr turn out so she doesnt really need alot, and she is a good doer. feed alot of fruit and veg in , that varies every now and then with some chaff like hifi or blue chip, unless he is prone to colic.

he is a very poor doer so not sure if that would keep him going?do you think if i added a balancer it would help?

My old pony used to take ages eating her food. She was always an incredibly slow eater but this became worse in old age with dodgy teeth. I found that if I soaked pony nuts and fed with happy hoof she ate her feed in the same amount of time as all the others!! Went down from 45 minutes to 10! It also helped her to maintain her weight as she didnt have to chew everything with dodgy teeth. This also protected her teeth from further wear. Unfortunately I only did this in the last two years of her life! I wish I had done it earlier as I always had to wait for her to finish before I could turn her out with her bigger pals again! ( twenty three years of waiting around every night adds up to a lot of time!!!)

So soak cubes and add a soft chaff. Also sugar beet can help and I believe it is easily digestible.

If you havent had teeth checked it would be well worth it. Find a really good EDT.

I will pm you about poor doers!

his teeth have been checked recently and they are fine-he just isnt hungry in summer!although he does love happy hoof(tried a friends)but not sure if this would benefit him?will try soaking cubes though....

our lad goes through phases, some days he'll eat his brekkie and tea happily, others he refuses it. I grate up carrots one day, suede another, parsnips another, and mix them into the feed so he has different tastes each time. He also loves crushed polos mixed in too.

Adding apple juice is another good one... they seem to love it.
