Had my new boy for a month now and he is losing a bit of weight. When he first came it was a struggle to get the girth on one hole either side and now it goes up easily. He currently gets 2 scoops of happy or healthy hooves ,a bucket of redi grass and approx one bale of hay a day.The paddocks are pretty bare so he only gets to nibble grass. He is a 15.3hh cob and He turned 5 last month so any advice on what to feed him to help him grow/hold his weight etc would be appreciated. He is ridden 3 or 4 times a week but not worked hard.

I feed a scoop of calm & condition, half a scoop of cool mix and will sometimes add half a scoop of cherry shine chaff. The horses I've had though have been purchased quite lean / poor conditioned so have used calm & condition to sort them out whilst I've been bringing them into work.

Does he need to put weight on?

I wouldn't panic too much as it is relatively early days but you could try adding a dolop of oil to his feed and or feeding speedi-beet. It does sound like he's getting more than enough to eat though so I would get his teeth checked and a worm count done too just to see if there is an underlying reason for him losing weight.

He is loosing weight and having a bale of hay a day:eek: How much will he need in the winter?
I would definitely get a worm count done, teeth as well.

cb fan and positive-me and older sister thought he needs teeth done so they are being looked at soon, started getting funny with his bridle. opens his mouth for the bit but once in he pulls his head around tries to spit the bit back out also funny when ridden which totally out of character.
doesn't seem to have any trouble eating though, which is odd.

I have already phoned my dentist but she probably won't be able to get to us for another 3/4 months so will phone his old owners dentist tomorrow. Will also worm the lot of them tomorrow. he isn't drastically loosng weight but i just noticed today that he was looking leaner then usual.
As i said above he currently gets happy hoof or healthy hooves but am interested to know if he should be on something different given he still has some filling out/growing to do.
Thanks for replies so far

He is probably not getting his full amount of vitamins and minerals so maybe a balancer would help.I use NAF Pink Powder and find it really helps, also use a himalayan salt lick as it has been hot and dry so may need some salt.
