I can't decide what to feed the new one, if any.

16.2HH, 4YO, Gelding. Ex-race horse but lightly reschooled. He's plenty forward enough so doesn't want any extra energy and will doing light to meduim work with him for the time being (I don't want him too fit untill he's alittle more established!) If he got the condition on then would like to show him to start him competing. He's turned out 24/7 in five acras (with only a two year old native). The grassing if very good. But because he's out 24/7 it's going to have to be a small as feed as possible because the other isn't feed and he takes ages to eat!

Debating blue chip??

What chaff?

What do people feed their ex-racers?

Thank-you : )

My friend fed hers calm and condition (Allen and Page) and Alfa A Oil (I also feed my ISH this) and she had like soya oil...but then ours are stable kept and turned out in the day! she may have had him on blue chip for a bit aswell but thats seriously expensive!

used to feed mine dengi hi-fi and either H&P nuts or fibre cubes (less heating for her than the H&P cubes) she had plenty of grass and also ate hay like theres no tomorrow....

in winter she used to drop loads of weight so i put her on calm and condition and also upped the chaff and added some horsehage and made sure she was toasty out in the field

[/ QUOTE ] He was on calm and condition with his last owner, I've just never had much luck with conditioning feeds, they tend to be quite dear and they need a quite a lot of it. I have Alfa-A oil but wasn't sure if it would be to heating? I also have Alfa, so it would be ideal if he could go on either of those.

I know blue chip is pretty expensive but I wasn't sure because you use a small amount(?) that is works out ok?

Baileys NO 4 Topline Cubes (NOT THE MIX!)

Also some apple chaff and multivits

In the winter or for a boost - some alfa beet as well.

Keeps the coat shiney and stops the ribbness (mine gets ribby easy in the winter).

Simple systems feeds. All forage based so feeding them in a way they can metabolise without heat. Worked wonders on my quirky mare!

You'll have to try the Alfa A Oil as mine is absolutely fine on it, but it sends my friends' chap into orbit. My chap is also on a pasture mix but he is ridden 5 times a week and Formula4 Feet for his atrocious TB feet!

My new ex racehorse looked pretty thin when I first got him. He's turned out 24 7 on good grass and has half scoop pasture mix, half scoop conditioning cubes with some molichaff and a liberal squirt of vegetable oil. He's looking pretty good at the moment.

This is him now on good grass and bit of food.

Good grass, teeth and worming work wonders!! He's ridden every day and seems fine on what he's getting.

No help...but what a gorgeous horse! What are you hoping to do with him?

FWIW I'm feeding topspec feed balancer which (I think) is the same idea as blue chip, but quite a bit cheaper. I give my two horses a cup twice a day each. Top spec is around £30 for a sack that's the same size as a normal feed sack if that makes sense, whereas (I think) blue chip is £42-ish for a 15kg sack?

Good luck with him - he's lovely.

Baileys no 4 topline cubes, agreed. fantastic product, very palatable, doesn't tizz them up. that and a bit of alfa and grass would be all i'd give him, i think. a bit of sugar beet perhaps if he's a fussy feeder.
all my ex-racer gets is that + a bit of Hi Fi, black sunflower seeds (to help grow better hoof etc).

Bailey's No 4, Alfa A Oil and a dash of water/sugarbeet to hold it together. gives my ex racer no fizz and plenty of condition. Over the years I've experimented with all sorts of feeds and this combo is the one that seems to work!

edited to add - i also gave him bailey's Outshine through the winter which helped alot.

'I found allen and page's calm and condition great for condition over the winter with alfa a and kept him quiet. Changed to happy hoof now to mix his supplements in as he's ballooneed with the grass!!

My ex racer mare gets Molichop lite (She gets so fat during the summer, and I feed my cob this too) with pasture mix. I also feed her NAF Magic to calm her down, and I can say it works wonders!
In the winter she gets Alfa A origional, conditioning cubes, and pasture mix.

I have problems keeping Oscar looking nice but not fizzy so I feed him Alfabeet and Alfa (A in the winter and hifi in the summer) and pink powder - he's got great condition and got placed 2nd first time out showing and judge commented on his condition (read fat!)

I personally wouldn't use build up cubes and Ty went a bit la la on them and bronced me off! I'd steer clear of any cereals too as from experience, my TB's just don't do that well on them! x
