Hello there,

I have had to retire my 18 yo gelding due to vets not knowing why he is lame. They are coming in for winter soon and I'll be giving him a small amount of cool mix just as a evening feed. I was looking at supplements just to help his joints and I was advised to mix some vegetable oil in with the feed. How much would I use - just a few tablespoons? Also would cool mix be the best thing - he gains weight easily and doesnt do any work now, maybe the odd walk out in hand. Someone else suggested a chaf? Any advice greatly appreciated.

I really like fast fibre. Its great for oldies. I would also suggest adding a bit of micronised linseed. Not too much if your guy is a good doer but its great for skin, condition and its not only high in fibre but has lots of oils in and much better than vegetable oil. You can get it from charnwood milling and although the intial outlay is pricey at about 25 quid delivered, the bag goes on forever. So these two things combined should be enough as fast fibre has vits and mijns in it. Its a really cheap feed combination and you can add hot water to it in the winter on those really cold days and its lovely and warming. My fussy mare loves it.
