hi i have just bought a 24yr old pony for lead rein, he needs a little condition, he has never had lami but want to be careful.
any ideas?

thanks

Ours older horses seem to winter really well on their diet of Allen and Page Old Faithful mix, sugarbeet and hay. They live out 24/7.

Our old pony (who has since passed) had rubbish teeth and struggled to put on weight he got soaked high fibre cubes and stud cubes so that they were a porridge, with some sugarbeet and alfa A. He couldn't eat hay due to his teeth.

if he's got good teeth winergy senior or condition maybe, both seem ok for laminitics but if his teeth are bad baileys no 1 and soaked high fibre cubes would be safe and effective.

My old lad is 27 and isn't on any special oap feed.

He's got good teeth and is still in work.

He has two feeds a day, Hi-fi lite, saracen horse and pony nuts and a few carrots and in winter I add suger beet. Then he gets his supplements, vit & mins, garlic, oil and ventil-ate.

Hay at night as stabled.

Did think he a while ago that he should perhaps be on a 16+ feed but he's doing really well on it so decided not to mess with what he's had for years.

Nooooo if he is prone to lami you don't want old faithful, it's 45% starch and 48% total sugars and starches... if he's never had it he soon will!

If he needs conditon but could be prone, try a fibre and oil based feed, Winergy are helpful in this respect, but any feed help line will give you advice. If you're concerned ring round some feed companies, get some information and decide what you think the best.

On forums its nice to have opinions but noone is a true expert and a lot of opinions will differ.

thank you, his teeth are ok but does struggle with some hay. i have just gave him some winergy condition that i soaked for a few minutes and he loved that. he does not have much topline, but he will be walked out a few times a week now so that should help.
