What to feed the EMS/IR/Laminitic horse?

As a good start point i'd get the forage analysed and feed minerals to balance the forage, try forageplus I've just had my feed plan back based on an analysis and am just about to start feeding my LGL TB specific minerals, people I know who've already done it are reporting really good results.

You want to keep sugar and starch levels down as much as possible, so no cereals, or cereal-based feeds or heavily molassed ones. If in doubt, email or phone manufacturer for sugar/starch levels - you really want a combined sugar/starch level of less than 10%. Unmolassed beet is quite a good choice as only 5% sugar and negligible starch and makes a good base for any supplements/medication needed. You can feed just a smidgeon of watery beet if a typical fatty laminitic, or up the quantity if needed to maintain condition (which is sometimes the case in Cushings/veteran laminitics).

As mentioned above, the sugar levels in your forage is important as this can vary a lot and some hays can actually be pretty high in sugar. So get your hay analysed, try and get low sugar hay (usually non ryegrass and late cut are best options). If you can't obtain low sugar hay then soak the hay to remove some of the sugar content.

Also ensure that the calorie content of the overall ration is not more than the horse needs as every increase in condition score over the ideal of 3 (on a 0-5 scale) greatly increases the risk of laminitis/EMS.
