Hi,

We are very new to the horse world.
We first got my daughter her first pony last year a welsh a and then we decided to get her a little friend so rescued a shetland.
We have learnt so much since we have had them.
Now my husband who used to ride many years ago has decided that he wants to get back on, he has been having lessons and we have just got him a horse.

She is a 16h Tb 17 years young, he will only be hacking her out a couple of times a week so very little work.

I am hoping that someone could advisor us now hat is best to feed her.

The lady we purchased her from told us just to give her hay?? Dose this seem right??

Any advice much appreciated.

It depends how much grass you have. I would personally give her a small hard feed of Equimins advance complete (that's a balancer/vitamins and mineral supplements) with a mug of full fat micronized linseed (high oil content makes coat shiny and provide calories and Omega 3s) and a mug or 2 of pony nuts/high fibre cubes (but would swap that for grass nuts and add alfalfa chaff if little grass or poor doer).
Good luck with your new mare :)

Thank you. We have a lot of grazing so she will have plenty of grass while out during the day and hay nets when in.

I forgot to mention that the lady said she sometimes gave her a cool mix!

Dont complicate things, if she is in good bodyley condition just give her hay when she comes in, or a token feed of high fiber cubes.
Just keep on eye on her weight as winter gets going.
