I keep my youngster on DIY and have been teaching a lovely, very mature 14 year old fellow livery. I'm having serious problems at home and she has been fantastic. Feeding and checking on my boy when I can't make it up. I want to get her something to say thank you for all her help but I have no idea what! I considered the purple numnah she really wants but her mum says she doesn't need so can't have. I'm just concerned that a) it's a bit boring and b) her mum might be a bit miffed if I get it when she has said no! I'm 28 btw and feel very old as I don't know what horsey teenagers are into now! I refuse point blank to go near KP equestrian stuff but beyond that I'm open minded!
Help!!
Ps Gratuitous photo of the baby horse in question!

Does it have to be horsey?

If she is a fellow livery I can imagine she already has everything horsey. When I was 14 I loaned horses. I would have loved my very own grooming kit :) How much are you wanting to spend?

If you get really stuck, bugger it, go for the numnah. It's a present her mum shouldn't really object to it

From the ones I know, I'd say just give her some money. That way she can get what she wants, and her mother can't complain if she chooses to buy said tasteful purple numnah! Very sweet youngster btw!

How about rather than a purple numnah, a purple saddlecloth with her ponies name embroidered onto it?

What a nice girl to have helped you out

1. What a lovely post!

2. Baby horse is adorable.

3. Could you ask her mum about the numnah and whether it would be okay? Or maybe other purple stuff: whip, or hat silk, or gloves.

or for something completely different, could you arrange to go for a hack together or something? When I was that age the best rewards were rides.

Does she have her own pony? My daughter is younger but loves diamante browbands- they are quite popular at the moment (got a collegiate one last night in a sale for £8!)

vouchers? either for a saddlery type place or a music store - maybe HMV always good with teenagers as they can pick their own stuff?

Its really nice to read a thread about someone finding kids/teenagers helpful i get a bit bored by the endless moaning of people at yards about children etc, especially as i am a parent- everyone was young and learning once.

Hi

If I was a teenager, I would want membership to Oli Townends club! Bought it for a teenager I know and it went down a storm! It was £15 so roughly the same price as a numnah and it lasts all year!

I know my 15 yr old would have loved vouchers from a local tack shop. She sounds lovely, someone to keep a hold of I think and especially as teenagers get bad press its nice to hear the good side as well.

Lucky old you. Having a 15 year old daughter (the Mini TX in question), dont reckon a horsey kid would go for a purple set of anything. Most of them want to wear trendy equestrian clothes for the yard, so anything in Musto, Joules, Ariat, Pikeur, or a gift voucher for something like New Look or Top Shop.

What a lovely kid, keep hold of her.

She does have her own horse and is doing a cracking job with her. I only have my youngster and at 16 months is generally just a pet! She helps me just because she loves cuddling and grooming him ( he is a very sweet snuggly youngster!) I think vouchers for the local tack shop and a lift over there to spend them might be the best option. Then she can choose what she wants for herself.
There have been a lot of posts recently about irritating teenagers but she really is one of the good ones and I want to do my best to encourage her to remain that way!!

Does she have her own horse? if so, I did this for a fellow livery at our yard secret santa - her pony was not so amused, (dragged out of his stable at night time, plaited and made to stand outside of the barn door looking into the light)
but she loved it. She was 14 too. -

Otherwise - vouchers for saddlery shop (then she can buy her own purple numnah :))

Allie 5 - she sounds like a star and that sounds like a great idea.

TX1 - your daughter sounds very much like mine, she wouldn't be seen dead in KP clothes either lol.

A Top-Shop voucher? Tickets for Your Horse Live 2010 in November? Or i noticed that Horse of the Year 2011 tickets are on sale already!! (cheapest is about £25). Olympia horse show? A ticket for the Addington Manor All Star forum a week Sunday? (they're only £10). Most 14 yr olds i know like clothes though!

I would get a voucher. that way she can choose herself and your present wont be unsuitable or wasted. Lucky you finding a keen teenager- theyre a rare breed these days!

What a great kid (and cute baby!).

Just a thought, but if the mum was being sniffy about the numnah, might be better to ask her what you can get/do for the kid to show your appreciation.

Lucky you! I would like to swap her for my particularly unhelpful 13yo please. Pretty please! I was such a wicked mother I threatened to sell her horse tonight - oops! Hope she is in a better mood when she gets in!

Seriously, you are very lucky, mine would like pretty much all the above suggestions - music, tack vouchers, clothes. Cinema tickets? Not much help, sorry.

Tickets to Olympia would have been my mecca at 14yrs old!! Sadly, a very, very long time ago...

I guess you could chat to her Mum too for some ideas? I like the idea of the numnah (if that's what she wants and no objection from Mum) with something else to go with it - maybe a matching girth??

Actually someone mentioned getting the numnah personalised - I really like that.

We are in Glasgow so might have trouble getting down there! However I've just remebered she is interested in showing. Maybe a showing book? Or does anyone know if there is a showing magazine I could get her a subscription to?
