Please help me out as im about to go buy a foal he wont have come off his mum yet and i get to pick which one i want so how do i know what to look for in good quality? how do i know he is old enough to come away from his mum? how do i know what hands he will make? Thanks Debbie

Hmm will you get to see both parents? by seeing what height they are you should be able to make a fair judgement as to what height they make. They can generally leave their mothers at about 6months ish once properly weaned. Temeprament, has it been handled at all? or will you be starting from scratch with that? Its confirmation, what do you ultimately want it to do? happy hacker, allrounder, showing, top class event horse???? you need to put all this into consideration.

Is there any possibility you can get someone such as your instructor to go with you?
Best of luck

I have seen both stallions and the man who owns them will know which is the dad. He will be with mum still so i will see her aswell. It hasnt been handeled yet but i think im going to ask them if i pay more can they do a bit with him before i collect him. i want to just do local things and just a bit of hunting when its older and have fun with it. I will do lots of research untill i make the decision as im not very clued up on foals but i have a few friends that are. Debbie

I bought a foal 2yrs ago and it was the best thing i ever did, costs the same obviously and by the time i am riding him no doubt i will have spent a small fortune, but he is worth it. I'd try to take one of your experienced horsey chums with you. Will you be keeping it on a livery yard where you can perhaps get a bit of support?

Anyway best of luck :) x

I cant find a yard around here that will take a colt or have grass livery so im looking to rent with a friend but i will meet with friends off my yard now so i can pick there brains with help. i wanted to buy a 2yr old but then they still can have so many bad habits so i though buying something younger will be harder and take longer but in the long run it will be worth it. thanks for the advice good luck with your youngster
