What to look for when a hoof abscess bursts

The farrier came out last night to attend to an abscess in P's hoof, he dug as far as he dare but nothing. We are poulticing to hopefully allow it to break through, but, stupid question, what am I looking for on the poultice, there was greenish gunk this morning, but I doubt I would be so lucky for it to have gone so quickly...

Black gunk on the poultice and an unbelievable smell that will make you want to vomit...

You will notice the smell before anything else. Tubbing in hot water with epson salts will help draw it out more quickly.
