Abscess has been fully drained for about a week now and horse has been sound in all paces since. There is a hole in his toe by the white line that was dug by the farrier to drain. It's about 1 common wide but narrows as it goes deeper. I have continued to dry poultice to protect as he is living out.
Now obviously I can't poultice for her ever but concerned about the hole especially as it's a bit muddy at the moment, plus would like to ride again!

What should I do with the hole? Was going to use keretex? Or a friend has some field paste?

Sugardine - sugar with iodine mixed in. Recommended by a vet, but if it has been a week it should have healed enough to keep out any nasties.

I was told by a vet years ago to use a bit of cotton wool soaked in hibiscrub, push it in with a shoe nail, then a dab of superglue smeared over the top, it drys hard but it does come out when you need it too! I still taped a bag on to stop wet and mud getting to it until the hole closed.

I would pack it, then duck tape hoof, so it wears away gradually, its always a worry, but most danger is straight after any cutting and exposing of wound. Any packing must help. but after two days it should be ready to heal, and at that stage it should be healing, imho. If there is weeping, use dry animal lintox and change 2 x per day til nomoreweeping.

Thanks all. Off to get some cotton wool etc and see how we get on. Cost me a bloody fortune in vet wrap etc

I buy the cheaper alternatives to vetwrap and only use half per poultice. I got a load of gauze swabs off ebay when my mare kindly stood on a nail. I'd second the sugar and iodine mix too. Great for hardening hoof up.

If I'm not too late I prefer gauze to cotton wool as you don't get so many loose fibres.

No not too late as I chickened out and put another poultice on.... need to step away from the poultice lol.
Got my iodine and sugar mix at the ready for tomorrow
