I was rubbing my horses ears yesterday and they have lots of little scabs in and blood, so the little suckers are busy biting their ears. I use fly spray on their bodies and have smeared Nettex Stop Itch on their tails and around private parts to stop the midges. What is safe to rub just on the inside of their ears. Have tried to use the fly masks with ears but they both go mad and try to rub them off.

I would be interested to hear others suggestions too - at the moment I put sudocream in my share horse's ears, I figure it might make it more unpleasant for the flies and heal the bites heal and soothe his ears a bit!

Could you not put the itch stop in their ears? At least it stays put well and has no scary spraying noise? Fortunatly my girl has the fluffiest ears in the world! I tend to cover her in itch stop on her mane though as it really seems to work and to last well - the spray ones don't even seem to last one day of turnout!

I did use the fly repellant wipes last year, and wiped it inside their ears. Just wondered if there were any other suggestions. Could try the itch stop in the ears it seems to be good stuff.

Udder cream - stops the little blighters getting through to suck the blood. Also will not take the hair off or irritate the ears.

yellow fly cream (I think it is actually called that) is good for sensitive areas / broken skin as it doesn't sting. Its in a white and baby blue tub and is BRIGHT yellow.

I agree with the fly masks-that's the only reason my lot have fly masks is because of the little blighters eating their ears! Failing that I have used the yellow fly cream as well-had great fun decorating the 2 American horses to look like they belonged to a tribe of Native Americans! :p

It's called 'Summer Fly Cream' and I found a picci:

I have tried the fly masks with ears, bought them both very expensive nice ones but they hate them and spend all their time trying to rub them off. I even bought one with a nose net for UV protection as one has a pink nose but she won't wear it. This is annoying cos to go with all the other potions and lotions I have to apply sun cream to her nose!
