It's weird, sometimes loads of people interested in towing cars and other times you get no replies at all!

I posted Sunday about our recent purchase, a 2002 Shogun. Wow! What a towing car, absolutely superb. However, to answer your question I would get a cheap 4x4 as they have more weight and more towing capacity.

Diahatsu Fourtracks are good little tow cars, but I would say the current bargains are Pajero's.

We sold our mid 1990's Paj for £550. I'll admit that visually it was a little the worse for wear, complete with the dents, scrapes and bite marks that go with daily equestrian use, but it was super reliable and coped with pretty much anything the weather could throw at it. It wasn't the fastest tow car, but we did a few thousand miles with our two ponies in my HB505 with no problems.

You should be able to pick up a good clean example for around a grand.

brill thanks :) i was thinking about 1k tbh.

although am looking on ebay to see what prices different cars are going for....

what about estates - like volvos???

i do know a good mechanic if any work needs doing :)

Another vote for fourtraks - had 4 now (over 12 years) not one has let me down (touches wood - got a flight to catch early tomorrow morning!!!) - would have another 4 but they don't make em any more!!

They are pretty cheap atm too - v down in the mouth when I found out mine was only worth 2,500 - so I'm gonna hang on to it

Bad points are body rust - but pretty easily managed - no fancy stuff to go wrong!! :D

This subject has been done time and again - do a quick search and you'll find loads of good advice / opinions.:)

For the record - personal favourite is the Range Rover - goes anywhere and does anything, all in total comfort. :D

...... and you'l need to do your towing test.

if you dont want to go for a big grunty 4x4, ive heard really good reports about the Kia Sorrento, still 4x4 and good towing capacity but a bit more car like if thats what you prefer?

yeah i know - test too :(

if i had someone who passed before 1997 in the car with me - is that legal?

i do intend to take my test if it all works out... but ...?

I have just bought an Izuzu trooper after years of having trusty Diahatsu fourtracks... I loved my Fourtrack, masses of torque brilliant towcar, not bad on fuel or insurance either, very basic and not alot to go wrong. I did look for another fourtrack but couldn't find one locally :-(( I asked about and have just picked up a 1996 Trooper - lovely car and tows nicely too.....and not expensive either I certainly couldn't replace my family car for the price I bought the trooper for!! I use mine for a short journey to stables and work about 25 miles a day and weekend towing. I love it!!

we had a volvo 240 estate for years, towed like a dream ( 2x 16.1 hh horses easily).
Only got rid because it got to 20 years old and we came into some money and bought a Landie ( defender 90 ) and we ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. Tows fab, my next car will be another Landie I'm totally sold on them.
