What do people recommend to put on leggies of a horse that lives out 24/7 to keep mud at bay as he appears to be getting mud fever and cannot live in??
Sensible answers please!

i've read somewhere that pig oil and sulphur is good?

Or some sort of barrier cream, the type that you would use for nappy rash

I've not used them...but how about;

Your problem is that the bacterium that causes mud fever (and rain scald) gets into the mud itself, thus reinfecting horses when exposed. Hence why some yards, and even specific fields seem to have mud fever when others don't.

All of the above can help but you must let there legs dry then brush mud off , do not wash it off !
And when the legs are dry I spray half vinager half baby oil mixture on legs and this kills bacteria as vinager is acid and oil to water proof . May sound mad but it helps keep it away !

Mud away spray and savlon where her scabby bits are...
Also spray the mane and tail condidtioner on as the mud just flicks off very easily...

Baby oil idea sounds good too...!

I swear by Keratex Mud Guard powder, which provides protection against mud without the greasy mess of creams. It's a bit pricey but well worth it. It wont actually stop muid adhering to the legs, but the powder will act as a barrier between the skin and mud.

Best stuff I have found (and I've tried a fair number!) is Net-tex Muddy Marvel Barrier Cream - it stays on for a full week in a field that consists of more mud than grass. I bring my ponies in for one night each weekend so their legs can dry off and then put this on and it really does make a huge difference. IMO for anything to work properly you really do need to have time for their legs to dry off once a week as otherwise any barrier could be trapping the bacteria on the leg rather than repelling it.

Have tried the liquid paraffin, pig oil & sulphur, zinc & castor oil, mud guard, udder cream, and more that I can't think off right now.
