My section A mare suffers quite badly from sweet itch.
She is stabled during the day to keep her out of the worst flies and midges, fed garlic, marmite and NAF Scratch+,covered in fly spray and potions and is supposed to wear fly rug but apparently doesnt want to so removes it herself or just shreds it till useless anyway.
She has rubbed her tail quite badly and has a couple of patches on her bum which are bald I use aloe vera gel to help ease discomfort but wonder if anyone has any good ideas of what to use to help encourage hair growth.
This is the first summer I have had her so didnt realise till it was too late how itchy she gets next year I will be more prepared and can start using preventative measures earlier.

I too would like to know an answer to hair growth as Horlicks has, what looks like an old rub across her nose, but it will not grow hair there!
I've been keeping it clean (no broken skin, just very dry skin) but wonderedif there was something anyone could recommend to help hair grow back!

hi, i have always been told that green oils gel promotes hair growth. i have used it on cuts etc & it has worked and my freind used it on her horse who had a big sore patch on his head & it worked. so may be worth a go !!

good luck !

Good old fashioned honey is very effective for encouraging hair regrowth. If you can't cope with using it in its natural state (it is messy!) then you can get creams with honey it - I think Hilton Herbs do one.

Failing that get some soft gel Vitamin E capsules from the pharmacy - break them open and smear on the contents. It's very good for reducing scarring too.

Mega tek from Tailgator is the best product I've ever used for hair regrowth.(www.tailgator.co.uk - they also do free P&P)
My accident prone and delicate madam gets rubbed by rugs and saddle pads, and rubs her tail when she's in season and Mega tek works every time to get the hair growing back.
I've also used it on her leg after she decided to lash out at a post and rail fence and scraped all the skin off her cannon bone, and you wouldn't know she'd done it - hair grows back the right colour too, not white.
It's not the cheapest product but you can get a little tub intended for dogs.

Mmmm that Mega tek looks good think I might give it a go as it also says it helps thicken manes etc and her mane is very wispy and weak.
Had thought about honey as it does semm to have great qualities with the added bonus of being natural but did wonder if putting something sweet on her would encourage flies around her.

Tailgator is fantastic stuff for manes – I’ve used it on T’s this year and it’s the thickest it’s ever been. It seems to help strengthen in and stops it splitting/coming out. I’m ordering another bottle today but might order some camrosa, too, as I’m not sure the tailgator is as good on bald patches as it is on long hair.

cornucresine - works, but remember to brush it on in the direction you want the hair to lay.

Friend ended up with a 'punk patch' on her horses bottom where she had brushed the conucresine on in the worng direction!
