hi i have just bought an appaloosa filly and i am thinking of in hand showing her next year she is leopard spotted and i am hoping she will be a real show stopper. problem is im not sure what i should wear to show her off to her best potential as she has a mix of white and spots on her legs (see pics on my profile its tuppence's fortune. as my computer wont let me load them). so i am confused weather to wear dark or light trousers with her. any suggestions? ? ? thanks.

As the majority of her leg is white I would wear dark trousers. I'd maybe go for a real definate navy, however, and steer clear of brown colours that are similar to the spots on her legs :)

possibly light cream/beige trousers, and a smart brown jacket , not a riding jacket but more of a tailored one, which could also look quite nice as a tweed one. it sounds silly but a nice 'cowboy' hat, or baker boy hat looks nice in hand. hope this helps i think these look quite smart and professional together.

yeah i have a really nice tweed green jacket i have used to show my welsh in and i think i have some navy trousers but now confused again as one advised navy and one advised cream ahhh lol. thank you for your replies by the way i really appreciate it. i think i will try the navy first and see how we get on. x

Quick 'rule of thumb' .... If your horse has light coloured legs wear dark coloured trousers and vice-versa for dark coloured legs. That way the judge can see your horses legs clearly. Does that make sense?:D

If you do feel like going light, try and find a proper yellowy beige cord instead of a cream colour, which will again stand out a bit better from his legs :)

I wore cream breeches and jod boots and chaps but I would wear light colour to show up spots! Picture of what i wore:

Lovely spotties. Just to throw a spanner in the works - I have an all American appaloosa so he gets shown, well - all American. I like to see the faces on the bowler-hat brigade when I enter the show-ring! Proper Stetson 'cowboy' hat all the way from Huston, Texas (friend of mum and dad). Show pants (black trousers from the USA easy to get these days) and very smart. Though I think in the pics on my 'profile' I had black jeans on (some designer ones I found in a charity shop!). The shirt under the jacket is a cotton dress-shirt worn by men under dinner jackets with some colourful patches sewn on (not by me I hasten to add), the jacket over the shirt is from the USA - again fairly easily obtained. There are various western outfitters in the UK. Check out Western Horse UK. Now available in the newsagents.
If it is hot and I decide I am feeling less colourful I wear a plain dress-shirt with a shaped black leather look waistcoat (horse has black patchy spots on legs but is snowcap so mainly white). I have a super belt - the buckle came from the USA and my saddle maker friend made the belt (though I did help a bit). The horse wears a leather show halter (head collar to us) but it is decorated with Montana silver and the lead chain goes on in a particular way that gives varying degrees of control depending on your horse. Mine's a stallion but he only requires it under the chin not over the nose.
My footwear are Toggi boots, black. Should be Ariat but can't afford them. The show pants are worn OVER the boots so they are not so important in the average show as long as they shine! I have not got around to kitting myself out for ridden classes - I hate to ride in public but guess it will have to happen one day - groan.
Don't suppose this has helped but hopefully it will make someone smile. Ye hah!

thanks rowy and suenroax ( sorry if not spelt right) omg rowy your ned is stunning.!!! thank you both for the advice .... i never really thought about the western look but i think i might look into it, it sounds like good fun and i would defo stand out from the crowd. thank you both x:)

usally tweed has checks through them, see wat colour the checks are and decide by these

my checks are blue and yellow with a bit of redness in them so i could still do either canary or navy as both are in. but i am going to try both down at the field next week just to see which looks best and im ordering some western style clothes as i am interested in trying that too. thank you all for all your help. xx:)

thanks for your reply sunshine but that hasnt helped as she has both colours on her legs so it doesnt really help about the rule from dark to light legs.

No problem, but I can't see why it didn't help you? I've had a good look at your spotty. She has more white on her leg than dark, I would definately go for the navy trousers you were talking about. I've shown and judged at affiliated level, just thought i'd take the time to pass on some tips.
Good luck with your class and remember to have fun :)

sorry sunshine the last reply wasnt ment to sound bitchy. she has alot of white on the sides of her legs but the fronts are brown with black spots on. but i am going to try a few colours with her to see which i like the best and what suits her and will try (if my computer lets me) put them on here for everyone to tell me which looks best. and thank you for helping x:)
