Hi,

Seriously thinking of taking the plunge and investing in a trailer however I fear the old 1.3 Fiesta is going to have to go lol!

Any recommendations for a towing vehicle to pull a two horse trailer - nothing too fancy, just your bog standard 4x4 that's not going to cost the earth (ie. not new!!).

Thanks all..... :-)

Some knowledgable person will respond I'm sure... But I'd say it depends on how heavy the horses are you intend to pull... Kerb rates are different for each car and must be considered for safety.
Remember, it's not necessarily about what a car is capable of pulling... It's more a case if what it's capable of stopping which is important!

I don't understand all the regulations regarding A and B licence etc but as I am an old gimmer and have a discovery towing a 505 they don't really concern me. I leave that sort of thing up to the experts, but here are my thoughts.
1st decision. Are you goung to have a car and a 4x4 or just a 4x4. We do huge miles per week so have opted for a car and 4x4. We use an old discovery we bought for £2000, have had the cam belt and clutch done and we have now had it 2 and a half years, it may or may not go through the next MOT (usual problem with disco's rotting underneath) It is mechanically sound and has done 190000 miles.
If you pay more it willl last longer, they do go wrong but are reasonabbly cheap on spares. When we replace it we are looking to spend about £5K for a slightly better one.
You can add to this Japanese such as Shogun etc. All will easily tow what you want but are generally thirsty.
You could opt for smaller such as Freelander, the newer ones will tow but you have to be a little careful regarding weights. Some people on here swear by them and are a compromise if you are not having a car as well. Check the towing capacity and reliability OF THE MODEL YOU ARE CONSIDERING as they do vary somewhat.
When you go to shows ask people who are towing with what you are considering what they think, generally they will give you an honest opinion of their veiws but do ask more than one as opinions/cars vary.
Don't rush into it.
Good luck.

The above really. We have an Ifor Williams 510 and a 10 year old Discovery. I only tow one horse...about 550kg but I understand that despite this our replacement vehicle must be capable of towing the trailer plus two 17.2hh horses ie2700kg. If this is true what is the best towing vehicle for this please? We hoped to buy a lighter and more economical car but maybe this is not an option!

I have a y reg ML270 which can tow upto 3.5 tonnes, although as my trailer is a lightweight Cheval Liberte I will never really need more than about 2.2 even with 2 big horses on.

It was bought more for a slightly better fuel efficiency than some other 4x4's (research done by my oh so can't give you any figures I'm afraid), mainly as it was originally bought to tow our caravan and we tend to go further afield with that than the local towing with the trailer.
