when my mare is being good i like to give her a treat but i dont know what to give her. she is out all day eating grass and in all day eating hay. any ideas?
Mine loves a nice ripe pear We once gave him a banana to see what he'd make of it and it kept him chewing for ages You can also give parsnips as well as carrots.
In small quantities mine have apples, carrots, Swede, parsnip, bananas, pears. Big one also likes oranges, tangerines etc. Both also have very occasional unhealthy stuff too like hot choc & cereal bars, mints etc.
Te he,
Poor boy has been on box rest since last August. I have been trying to keep him amused. Hiding carrots and sprouts in the depths of his small holed haynet keep him busy for a while.
He starts walking on Sunday, no sprouts that day, we don't want him to get
started, farted, slipped up and fell !!
My boy likes/has had
Sprouts
Turnip
Carrot
Parsnip
Melon
Orange
Apple
Pear
Bannana
Grapes
Swede
Potato (very very occasionally) Starch level.
A nice crusty roll/bread baton.
A cream egg this was an accident... *sigh*
Califlower (loves it)
Has had pineapple -no idea if that is good at all for them!
Peaches
Plums
Strawberries and blueberries
He has also has birthday cake - it was his birthday (not a whole one of course!)
I used him to catch loose horses at our point to point and whilst being admired by spectators he very gently pinched a childs candy floss. Child burst into tears whilst I fumbled around in my hunt jacket for a £1.00 to buy her another one !
Every year after that we always bought him a candy floss when he was at the point to point.
Wonderful memories of a wonderful horse. Happy hunting in the sky old boy and I hope you have found a candy floss maker.
Mine love melon, biscuits, peaches, raspberries, the usual vegetable and fruit types and my mare loves a sip of wine. . . . Controversial!
As they are at home we just throw all leftover fruit etc out with them and see what they like!
P.s for giving medicane take the stone out a peach and replace with danilon! Works a treat.
Mine ADORES his marmite sandwiches! Marmite contains brewers yeast, which is brill for him as he's a sweet-itchie. He'll chomp away and lick his lips for ages afterwards, hilarious.
Little mare thought I was trying to poison her though when I tried her with some the other day!!
I personally tend to avoid carrots: the last horse I had was laminitic and my farrier said best to avoid as they contain beta caratene - which presumably isn't good for anything remotely inclined to laminitis. I've also heard that some horses go daft on it and its a bit like rocket fuel for some (I've personally seen what beta caratene can do to humans i.e. make children in particular hyper-active, so would avoid it like the plague anyway).
We've got loads of apple trees here so they tend to have what's here as its cheap and cheerful!
