Maesfen
Extremely Old Nag!
IF -
I won the lottery,
I didn't have a very bad back,
I had enough storage,
I could guarrantee the quality of each bale,
I didn't have so many horses
and a hundred and one other reasons,
then I'd be on oat or barley straw every time. There is nothing nicer than seeing your horses snuggled up in a deep bed of that in the winter, always gives me a warm feeling too (but don't give me wheat, it's a complete waste of time and rubbish quality)
AS I'm none of those things, mine are on rubber mats with wood pellets which do everything I need (quick, easy to use, light, don't take up much space and cheaper by far than any other bedding I've used.
Last year, I had six in from October to April and my bedding costs were just over £400 so something like £60 per horse; anything else as reasonable as that?. They had good deep beds which were clean and dry (I semi deep litter as in poo out every day, bed stays down and wet out once a week. Worked a treat and took less than an hour tops even in spite of me taking breaks because of my back) My only gripe with pellets is the colour, I wish it wouldn't look like dark sand but apart from that I wouldn't change back for anything - unless I won the lottery and had a groom!
