*no bigger than 14.3
*nothing too 'heavy'
*would like to do showing, higher than local level as already have a local level WHP - prefer plaiteds as enjoy plaiting (mad i know)
*would really really like a spottie or palomino or coloured, something striking
*would like something that can/will be able to jump up to about 3'3ish
*not an arab i dont think unless i can find a sane one all the ones ive ridden have been a bit too woah for my liking & dont often see ones that can jump well (sorry for stereotyping!)
*would like to get a reg breed if poss

erm i think that is a brief run down of my ideals. what do you think ??

i never seem to get what i start out looking for.... last time i was looking for a 14.1-15 cobby type safe but fun, not chesnut and preferably a gelding - and got my 13.1 chestnut mare! doh!

why not go for a nice coloured , you could then do chaps or bspa in hand and ridden and other types of showing

New forest! Ok... so was rather predictable.. but they are so capable... and showing wise not just m&m, Lovely hunter ponies, Riding show ponies... I think people think there just hairy, heavy, fat, things... Oh and my god can they jump!

I am biased, but I would definitely recommend an M&M! If you want something more athletic then how about a Connemara or New Forest? You won't be able to plait them, but there are literally dozens of different classes available for M&Ms, and you will be able to work your way up through the levels as well.

Yeah, i too am biased, but would say New Forest! This is my boy, pure NF, went county level as Show hunter pony, but he does SJ, XC Dressage, hunting - absolutely everything. They really are such fun versatile ponies!

How old are you? There are age limits on most plaited classes (20 for 15hh SHP/WHP, 17 for 14hh SHP/WHP etc). The only plaited class you can do at county level on a pony without an age limit is coloureds that are piebald or skewbald.

There are very few classes for Paliminos and Spotties at county level shows, and they tend to be more at the specialised shows.

There are loads of oppertunities in m&m classes. If you went for a connemara or New Forest you could plait up and do SHP/WHP classes at local level as a plaited too, although a 14.2hh would look very small in affiliated 15hh classes.

Get a decent coloured at around 14hh or 15hh and you will also be able to do show hunter pony classes and workers to a decent level (assuming you are the right age group) . That will give you coloured classes (in hand and ridden), SHP, WHP and all the variations therein (novice, amateur, open, HOYS/RIHS qualifiers etc etc)

However, a decent 14/15hh coloured to do a highish level will be quite expensive, so you may be better off looking around for a nice 3 year old and bringing it on over a year or so rather than buying ready made.

If you are older, then the other option is to go for a coloured cob, so you could do cob classes as well. Unfortunately these are pretty expensive as well, so keep your eye open for a bargain!

A coloured (but if you go down that route get a real heavy one with feathers, much nicer IMO), or a New Forest. As already said, New Forests are so versatile. Okay not as flashy as a welshie, but they have much more common sense and you can get some cracking ones.

If you want to do showing at higher than local level, then you need to take your age into consideration if you want something smaller than 14.3hh.

I would say a M&M or coloured would be your best bet. Maybe you should go round a few shows and watch those classes to help you decide which breed/type you prefer.

You could find a palomino welshie, but a spottie that you can show at higher than local level could be difficult as they are often foreign breeds and there's not that many classes for them.

A nice 153cm coloured or perhaps a nice small show hack. How old are you? If you are under 25 then you can show riding type which has 2 sections 146cm to 153cm and over 153cm to 158cm. Then you can also do the adult hack or riding horse classes.

Or a really smart small hunter (ok over your desired height) up to 158cm and you can then do smalls and workers (a lot of fun)

Oh what about Blackie (see below), he will have to be sold sometime this year so we have enough money to buy GinaGem a new one. He may be a little heavier then what you are looking for though but I certainly think he would make a lovely little show cob, but then I'm biased!

oh blimey lots of ideas thanks guys!!

Highlands and coloured cobs - not too sure i want a cob / heavy... but wouldnt rule them out as such

people that asked about my age i am 20 (21 in september) so i know i will be limited to some extent - but i really cant have anything much over 15hh i dont think. im only 5ft2 and really dont like big horses (with the exception of drummer and some other friends horses) its just impracticle for me to have anything over 15hh and i prefer ponies really X
