Just read the 'what tack was fashionable' thread and remembered when I did my BHSAI back in 1984, (at a very good establishment that shall remain nameless), I was taught never to have the elastic strap, on my beagling cap, down as it loooked unprofessional! Have to say although I no longer wear one ot ride in I still love my beagling cap!!!

In Canada (and the USA) in the late 80's/early 90's, we had helmets with clear plastic harnesses that you could unsnap inside if you didn't want a harness. I remember seeing top show jumpers wearing them and that is why I asked my mum to buy me one :D I loved that hat but not very safe to ride in!

I worked at an equestrian centre as a groom a million years ago.

When we rode or taught, we had to wear:

Cream breeches/jodhs
Long black boots
White shirt
Blue tie
Blue V neck jumper
Gloves
Hair tied back and a hair net.

As I rode between seven and sometimes ten horses a day, I had to be organized or I was forever getting changed!:D

I also had the hat with the fixed peak and the full chin harness.... If I'd ever come off and hit the peak, I'd have broken my neck . Poor Mum! Although we weren't well off, she always bought the best head protection available (little did she realize!).

I remember my chin cup giving me the most awful rash whenever I wore it! But they were the height of safety back then. I had a gilet but we called them 'bodywarmers'. Pimple gloves and a hairnet whenever I rode. And nothing horsey was ever colourful - either cream, navy, black or brown.

Hey those quilted jackets with corduroy collars are right in fashion now! I keep seeing people in them with leggings and doing a double take, to see if I know them in some horsey way- then noticing their false nails, high heels and posh handbag. Very odd!

Those quilted jackets were called Huskys and Princess Ann used to wear one they were the IN THING to wear, Stylo boots - lovely and warm for hunting but far too hot for summer shows!!

Husky's and flat tweed caps or puffa and a headscarf under your hat - more for spectating than riding though. Cringe when I look at it now. Was early 80's
