He's a 14hh Irish cob with 9 inches of bone, to be used for light hacking, probably mainly at walk. I have someone who wants to ride my pony a couple of times a week but not too sure whether shes a little too heavy. Also, how do you politely ask someone what they weigh?

I have no idea how much he can carry but as someone who used to be very overweight it's a very touchy subject.

I would say something along the lines of "I'm sorry if this is difficult for you it's difficult for me too" "he can carry a max of xx stone" or "I wouldn't want anyone over xx stone to get on him" and let the rider decide. Sure they can lie about their weight and say it's fine when it's not but they can say they weigh 11 stone when in reality they weigh 13!! That way they don't have to actually reveal their weight to you.

yep, I'd just bring it up in a conversation or email f you are in email contact? and say "he's a great chap, can stick all sorts on him and he's good as gold, and a nice little weight carrier too, although from past experience i'd say XX stone is his limit" - a little white lie.

I used to ride a 14hh "cob"- although he wasn't very cobby at all, but I'd aay he had about 8 inches of bone. I weighed 13 stone at the time, it was at a riding school that took us out on lnog fast beach rides and I took the instructor to one side because I was convinced I was too heavy - but she said he'd be fine, and he certainly managed to win the beach races with me on board, so I'd say he probably was!

Thanks for your replies, I'll be very diplomatic with the weight issue and hope she isn't over 13 stone and have to turn her down. At least now I have an idea as I hadn't got a clue.
