hi,
i have a 14.2hh medium/heavy weight cob mare> i was wondering how much she should weigh?
she is kept on restricted grazing in a track system but is looking a bit fatter than i would like!
has anyone got any ideas of how i can get her to loose a bit of weight please?
i am not able to exercise her much more than i do (she is a light hack) she lives out 24/7 in an approx 1.5 acre field with two shetlands and as i say, they are kept in a 12 ft track around the outside of the field at the moment.
any ideas gratefully received!

Hi, regarding how much your cob should weigh I'd personally be inclined to monitor weight by condition scoring. Weigh tapes are good for monitoring weight gain or loss, but not for giving you an actual weight. Most cobs of that size would be around 400kg - 450kg I would think, but again it is a guesstimate and they can vary hugely. The WHW has some good videos on how to condition score.

When I've used a track system in the past I've often had to make it smaller when the grass growth is good, if that is an potion for you? I tend to just use two or three sides of the paddock rather than the whole lot if there is too much grass.

1.5 acres is a fair size especially as the grass has grown at a very fast rate this year.

I would half the paddock then do a track around just one. Save the other for winter
