What weight should she be?

I have just bought myself a lovely 13.3/14hh welsh section D. She's 4 in April but is a slim build. Or though she doesn't show visible ribs, she isn't holding a lot of fat. Have wormed her a few days ago (never been wormed before) and turned her out yesterday in a big paddock full of grass.

I weigh taped her and she came out at 350kg. She is bum high and should make about 14.2hh.. My question is- what weight should she be roughly?

I feel she should be around 450kg but I don't really no the breed well enough to know what she should be and want some more opinions.

Pictures of her on a recent thread, she looks fatter in the field photo's but she really is quite thin (or so I feel). She's just filling out a 5ft3 rug :)

Thanks!

No, she is probably about the correct weight, but the tapes are "averaged" so not great for growing horses which are out of proportion compared to mature horses, the important thing is to record the "weight" and then repeat every week, plus condition notes, and feed etc on her "stud card"
My 14.1 1/2 TB type was 385 when I bought him three years ago, now he is 15.00 and 485kg

Thank you mrsD123 I'm rubbish at correct weights, my other mare gem can be out on acres of grass and stay perfect- just not a greedy mare, also she is forever mooching about!

Will be sure to keep a diary of weight/condition :)

You are far better using condition scoring than weightaping; the latter is useful to keep a record of any weight gain/loss but is not that accurate, especially with growing horses.

Sounds like yours is just a less sturdy build than some other Welshies, or maybe will just take a little longer to fill out properly.. Either way, you are better off keeping her at a healthy condition score than trying to put excess weight on. :)

I agree, you would be better fat scoring, weight really does depend on each individual horse. My MW irish cob is 438kg at the moment and FAT! I cant feel ribs, he is holding fat on his shoulders and bum. So been on a diet for about a month now ... when he is around 426kg again I will be happy!

Spillers sent me a fab 9 point condition score, really detailed and better than the 5 point system.
