After my YO telling me all week that my horse is so fat I am going to have problems with her all summer, I decided to dig out my weight tape!!

She is a 16HH friesian mare and according to the weight tape she is 510kg.

Dont get me wrong I know that she is a bit heavy and could be leaner but is that really that heavy for a reasonably chunky 16HH horse??

I don't think 510kg is overweight at all for a 16hh friesian!

Do you have a picture?

Ditto - on a weigh tape my 14.2hh Welsh Cob comes in at 490kg so that sounds very light!

Sounds good to me although Friesians can have quite a small chest judging by the two on my yard on the weigh tape could be misleading. Do you have any photos?

I dont but will take one tomorrow (have got knickers in a right twist)

My 15.1HH IDxwelshD was 470 on the same weight tape and she was def not overweight, she was actually pretty lean. So by comparison I would not have though 510 was that heavy.

She is pretty cresty but thats more to do with her breeding. She was very underweight when i got her and she had crest then.

My 14hh L/W cob mare is quite underweight and shes 360kg! so no! thats not bad at all! Some YO dont now what the hell there talking about lol

Well weight tapes are not really accurate and are more useful for monitoring weight gain/loss with regular use. I try to keep my 16.3hh IDXHannovarian at about 55okgs according to my weight tape as this is what she looks best at. I have no idea if she really weighs this, I doubt it because that sounds quite light for her build, but I know that that is the best mark on the tape for her to be at. We check weekly (usually) and adjust feed accordingly.
The best thing to do with the Friesian is to condition score.
