Well other day I noticed a worm in the youngsters' poo so I spoke to vet who then did a worm egg count as thought was roundworm, results showed no eggs etc.
Youngster was wormed 3 weeks before she came to me (came to me on 10th nov) with equest. My lot were done on 2nd nov with equimax. Vet suggested to do her for tapeworm with something like strongid-p. I have just found another worm today I think it looks like pinworm. She pic.....

Worm is in middle of pic sorry it's blurry!
It has a bigger end about 2cm long and half cm wide if that and then has a skinny bit about 2-3cm long.
I looked around her bum and coudn't see any yellow type discharge.
So my question would you go on and worm again I have another equimax tube so then she is covered for tapeworm as well or ??
Would you worm the others again? Am paranoid now never had problem with pinworm that i'm aware of, assume we can't catch these worms??
Thanks :)

It looks like pinworm. Roundworms are solid in colour whereas pinworm are translucent i.e you can usually see the insides of them. Tapeworm are long and flat, segmented.
Pinworm does not usually show up on a worm count and are a real pain to get rid of. I used panacur 5 day and touch wood it seemed to have worked but its also advisable to really disinfect the stable and any scratching posts!

She hasn't been in stable for couple weeks now, would you still disinfect it? Also getting different suggestions of which wormer? Should I do the other two or will they be covered as were wormed before she came. Is it a good sign that she is poo'ing out the worms ie is the equest still working etc ? :)

Equest works for up to 3 months, so that is why you are still seeing dead worms being ejected.

Youngsters are particularly susceptible to pinworm, and yes it can be a devil to get rid of but Equest is very effective.

I would just be cautious with worm egg counts... due to the methodology it is possible to get a false negative result relatively easily (pin worm also won't show up IIRC).

Youngsters are generally more susceptible to higher burdens than adult horses and I would probably go with whether she is showing any active pinworm symptoms (as they are relatively low pathogenecity compared to others) as to whether I wormed again yet or not - you are also trusting her previous owners to have given the correct dose.

I second asking westgate lab. My mare had pinworm and i used strongid p 3 x 10 days apart (or panacur 5 day). Clean bum daily and Vaseline for a month and scrub your stable to within an inch of your life!! A Sellotape test will show pinworm.

Do a Sellotape test: take a six inch piece of Sellotape, place over affected horse's anus and press down. Fold 'dirty' halves together and post to Westgate. Google them, they will send you a test kit for other worms within 2 days then you send both back, results within a day. Second the Panacur 5 day guard and disinfect anywhere she's rubbed her bum. Pinworm can incubate for up to 6 months and a wormer with ivermectin in will be good.

Talk to Westgate for a tailored worming programme. I'd be tempted to re-worm the others but only after treating the mare.

The most effective treatment for pinworm seems to be Panacur equine guard, Equest although very effective against gut dwelling worms does not seem to clear pinworm very effectively at all..

ok so I spoke to westgatelabs and my vet. Westgate said to do youngster with double dose of strongid p (will cover for tapeworm as well then) didn't say whether other two need doing again.
My vet said to do youngster with equimax (already have a tube of this) and the other two with just a ivermectin based wormer and then to do a dung sample in couple of weeks and if anything comes back in that can do selloptape test etc. :)

It is widely known that ivermectin is not very effective for pinworm so no point in using Equimax whatever the vet says. Yes it will also cover tapeworm but so will double Strongid and is also much better at treating pinworm, not to mention roundworm which can also be a problem for youngsters. (Ivermectin is also not good at treating roundworm). To treat pinworm you need double pyrantel or 5 day Guard plus very good hygiene measures.
