What would be a fair price for this horse?

Briefly: 8 years old. Great breeding. Low mileage but was with a respected event rider on sales livery who said had a great brain and plenty of ability.

Bought for a teen who outgrew ponies. Fab with her for a month, then went lame 6 months ago. Hoof abscess and infected pedal bone. Surgery. Recovered. During rehab did a tendon messing in the field soon after being allowed out for first time. . Vet says no reason for him not to make full recovery. But needs 3-4 months rehab and has advised he stay on box throughout so he’s fully fine and working before being turned out this time. Angelic in stable. Temperament to die for. Working in hand in walk daily and good as gold. Was fine to hack out on roads after first injury, despite weeks of box rest. He was always going to be sold in Sept anyway when teen owner goes to Uni. If someone was willing to take a punt on him now what would a fair price be? Pre injury was low 5 figures.

Most tendon injuries I’ve known of heal with some scar tissue which is less flexible, so increased risk of injury. I’d say worth nothing until been sound in work, competiing, 6-12 months after returning to work.

He might next do other tendon when back on turnout. Prelonged box rest is so harmful to soft tissue structures

Crikey that is a tough one, especially if it is a horse you have become fond off and have worked to get him right again. To be honest I did do a sharp intake of breath when I read it and immediately thought not with a barge pole, but on reflection if I had a spare thousand or two I might take the gamble. If, of course, I also had the time and patience to do the rehab with a horse I had no connection or commitment to.

Thanks everyone. I was thinking around 1k too, basically ‘can afford to lose it ‘ price. Particularly as there would need to be repeat scans etc.

Just wanted to sense check my thoughts.
If kept at livery and hand walking plus rescans cost of 3-4 months box rest & time commitment not small. Different to buy cheaply & put in field to rehab.

The last time I took on a horse with an injury like this they were asking £800 and I offered (and it was accepted) £200 to collect later that week.

I would probably go to 1k if for whatever reason that is the only thing I had available AND I really loved the look and type of horse and it was of sane character.

For me it's no longer the financial punt but it's also the emotional toll it takes on you too.

Looking after a horse on box rest well, and keeping entertained, hand grazed & hand walked is hard, especially if fair distance to yard!

I bought my mare for £1000. She was sound and backed but no guarantee what she can do after an injury as a 3 yr old. She could be 100% or might not stand up to work.
I needed another horse, she has done nothing since I bought her but do her job as a second horse so there’s no stress with her. She’s beautiful and that’s the important thing 😂

I’m not sure I would get one that needed box resting though. Turn away for a year possibly but not box rest.

Right now, I’d say £250 ish. He’s going to be a walking bundle of things the insurance won’t cover, loads of extra work and time and no promises that you’ll have anything useful at the end of it.

I’d pay more if he could go in the field for a year but box rest is just hassle.

And basically you’re looking at PTS in a year or so if he doesn’t come right so there’s costs and heartbreak there too.

Just to clarify, it’s not my horse - but a horse I’m potentially interested in.

(Some comments sound like the posters think he’s mine).

Oh as a potentially interested buyer I’d say you’ve definitely got the upper hand in this! There’s not going to be a queue for him, at least.

If you’re sure you’re interested, I’d rock up with some cash and a lorry on the day and see how cheap he gets. As he stands now, he’s just hassle every single day and if the rider is off to uni in September, those A Level exams are awfully close on the horizon.

Did I read it wrong? I thought he had started work and it’s going to be rehab work from a stable (which he seems to be coping with) and not “box rest”?

And the prognosis from the vet is positive?

Which tendon did it do, whereabouts in the body of the tendon was the injury and how bad was it? What treatment has it received to date? Can your own vet view scans? What level was horse competing at pre-injury? If this was say, a couple of levels above what you want to do then I may take a chance on it if it was a nice person and I had my own facilities to do the rehab that weren’t going to cost and I didn’t have the budget to buy anything less problematical.
I would only pay meat money.

What do they want for him? I would want to know if they are realistic, before i insult them with a low offer. I agree with the majority nearer £500
